Hi All,

True to the Mercedes brand, I part exchanged my '99 E430 Avantgarde for a lovely '00 CL 500, it has the COMMAND system installed but no TV Tuner, I'd like to get the TV Tuner installed but Mercedes want £811 + VAT for the unit and then fitting on top, which I think is really expensive seeing as I had an Alpine TV Tuner installed in my E430 for £300, does anyone know where I could get one cheaper from please??? And also does anyone know if the COMMAND screen can be changed for the newer widescreen model.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Kind Regards
Jo

Try contacting BrayBrooks, they may be able to help although they are not the cheapest place around, but do specialise in this type of work.

Keep a watchfull eye on e-bay. I paid £150 for my TV tuner.

Unfortunately the wiring loom cost another £250 from my stealer, but I still reckon I got a bargain.....

Just a quick question: do people find the TV Tuner useful in their cars? I've not specified it on the CLK I've got on order, but it seems like it's easier to get it done by the factory, rather than retro-fitted. I've been thinking about it, but can't really work out whether I would use it at all.

Just a thought, you can't watch it when your moving, and when your stopped… wouldn't watching a nice big TV in your sitting room be better than the itty bitty 7" screen in your car?

In the 12 months I've had my S500 I've only really used it once. I had to pick up my daughter from Scouts while the Bill was on and I sat outside the church hall watching it while I was waiting for her.

Apart from that its only really got pose value.

On the older command units (not the latest DVD based unit) can't you get them modified so you can have the TV on all the time?

I use mine to listen /watch the bbc1 news on the way to work.
wife likes to watch coronation street if out & about.

got lottery numbers off teletext doing 70 on the M61 once. that was quite novel.

son occasionally uses it with his ps2.

ebay is the best place to buy & wiring looms only cost about 75 Euros there.

… sorry, but that's not clever

The roads are dangerous enough without drivers watching the TV at 70MPH! And if the Cops catch you, you could get banned.

If you want the lottery numbers why not just get them from WAP or by text messaging, as long as the phone's in a cradle its perfectly legal!

I dunno , new laws about using the mobile while driving say as long as its attached to the dashboard its okies.

So , really the tv is attached to the dashboard and teletext isnt a moving image or anything . so can't see the illegality of it :)

…construction and use regs

But watching the BBC news is going to be a bit more distracting watching teletext!

The Construction & Use Regs and Road Traffic Act say it's illegal for a driver to be able to view a TV picture whilst in motion, the only exemption if for a dedicated Nav Display. The TV display is supposed to blank when you put the car in drive if the screen is visible to the driver. I know people offer conversions to bypass it, but I would imagine your insurance would be very invalid if you were in an accident and the Insurance Co got wind of it. Hence the disclaimer in the ads about only watching the TV display whilst off road or stationary.

If I'm banging on a bit, sorry guys, but I have a bit of an axe on this issue having ended up with a busted back three years ago when a guy in a Range Rover plowed into my stationary car at a roundabout when he was busy texting. His comment to my wife was "sorry, I was miles away". I'm still fighting the court case and in my books if your driving a car put down the phone, switch off the TV and watch the road.

Guys,

Thanks so much for all your help, I will drop MBenzNL a line and see what he says.

Many Thanks
Jo

I'd say that it' definitely worth ordering now. It's a great little extra (like many others on here I'm a gadget freak).

I don't have it myself but a friend has it in his new CLK and it's great for catching up on the news / sports results on the way to & from work or while the wife is out shopping! We're looking at getting it installed in my Dad's 2002 S320 he's got Comand 2.5, Merc wanted over 1k for the work  !

The best I've found so far is Nav-tv.co.uk. They've got dealers all over the UK and a guy not far from where I live is listed as a dealer. Their website lists their conversion as £600. Heared all the good stuff about Braybrooks (they always have a full page ad in the Merc Owners mag) so may give them a call to see what they want.

Opps - Sorry to cause such a stir and sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I failed to mention that the teletext bit was being operated by my wife and I did only glance accross - no worse than checking a radio station or sat nav .

My phone kit is totally hands free and I cant text so dont do that moving or stationary.

I should also like to qualify the fact that I "listen" to the BBC news whilst moving and "watch" it when stationary, blanking the display accordingly.

Whist I have watched TV on the move when I first got it , I wholeheartedly agree its a bad habit which I do not condone and I perhaps should not have made the original post in this regard as it gives the wrong impression.

For what its worth I'm trading in my car today for one that doesnt have a screen so I cant be even tempted to watch tv on the move any more.

Aww, you're finally trading the beast in then? What are you buying to replace it? :)

… sorry Steve if I caused offence

Sorry if I came across as a bit of a 'holier than thou a**e' Steve. I was just in a bit of a mood having just been told by my solicitors when I came home that its back to court again in April, the other side are still fighting and its getting a bit expensive.
So apologies and I'll wind my neck in a bit in future.

Best regards

Andy
