Tyre air escape because of rust on rim

The tyre on my car losses pressure because of rust on the edge of the rim. The tyre repair centre used a metal brush to remove rust from the edge then refitted the tyre. It was ok for 3 weeks, then the problem returned. Is there a sealant that I can put on the joint between the tyre and the rim to stop the leak?

Most tyre centres clean off the corrosion then apply a sealing compound to the rim. Possibly the corrosion on your wheel is to severe for this to work?

Are we discussing an alloy wheel? Alloy wheels can also become porous

"Rust" implies a steel wheel, but as you surmise I anticipate that we are talking about corrosion on an alloy wheel.

If alloy this link may help:-

Thank you for the reply. It is an alloy wheel. It is 13 years old. I think the rust is where the wheel has rubbed against a curb in the past.

I should have said "Welcome" earlier !

You don't state your location in your profile, but there are a number of recommended alloy wheel repairers across the country.

It may be time to consider sprucing up all your wheels.

I have found these guys, who have a number of branches, to be good:-

Have a look online for Ferrari and other old exotics being refurbished , a lot of the old stuff had proper magnesium wheels that became porous with time . I think the aircraft industry also 'fixes' porous Mag wheels.

Porous mag wheels is a very different think to a bit of surface aluminium oxidation. It normally just leaves a surface too rough for the bead to get a good seal on. A lady at work has a RAV4 that shes needs to put air in three of her tyres weekly because of corrosion on the beading surfaces.
