E430 Avantgarde Estate 2000 Plate
Hello all

I have a 1999 e430 avantguard S210 estate which is non Ulez compliant. I have just come across a 2002 elegance model for sale that is Ulex compliant. I have checked on the tfl website to confirm this.

I want to keep my s210 as I have spent a lot keeping it in good condition. Obvious question is what's the difference between the 2 models that makes the 2002 elegance model compliant ?

thanks

dave

Sorry I don't know the answer but I'm sure someone will be alone soon. I see in your profile you're in Upminster too, me too

Minimum emission standards

Petrol: Euro 4 (NOx)
Diesel: Euro 6 (NOx and PM)

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. However:

  • Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001

You’ve got an E430 which is “probably” Euro3. That E430 engine was changed in July 1999.

Thé élégance you’ve seen from 2002 has a different cleaner, more economic engine. It’s not some mere simple mod.

The E430 with the revised engine ran from July 1999 to 2002, when it was replaced by the E500.

If your car is July 1999 you should challenge TfL that it’s Euro 4, not Euro3. Being civil servants they don’t bother with detail much and are often wrong

Euro 4 didn't begin until Jan 2005....so you wont get a 1999 car through.

The honest answer is the emissions from your 1999 E430 (with sixteen plugs and four catalysts, IIRC) are likely no worse than a 2/3 year newer registered example of the same/similar model. But sadly certification is what is needed to become compliant.

Not sure about the 2005 thing, there’s plenty of pre-05 registered petrol cars that are compliant :thumb:

There may have been some before the dates below...but 4 years before seems a long time.....but Im not saying you are wrong..... The type approvals of new cars had to be a year before the dates below after which all cars registered had to comply.

My car newly registered from:Emissions standard
31 December 1992Euro 1
1 January 1997Euro 2
1 January 2001Euro 3
1 January 2006Euro 4
1 January 2011Euro 5
1 September 2015 - but see important note belowEuro 6

Sorry, guv, those were the deadlines for conversion. Many cars were ready in advance of the deadline.

Lots of cars were already Euro 4 before 2006, from the mighty Mercedes V8's to my modest 2004 Mx5.

Here's an example grabbed from Autotrader:

And here's an example of a ULEZ compliant 2002 E430 with a Euro4 engine. (Again example stolen from google)

My memory is shaky on this stuff, and I'm definitely not the mechanic, or even the greasy rag. I'm the bloke who pours him a coffee.

But I believe that in 1998 switched from a 4 valve to 3 valve 4.3 litre engine to give better emissions and mpg. (I would guess that this was done as much for the US market - the prime market for this model - as for Europe)

E430 was always 3-valve (M113)

You might be thinking of the earlier M119-engined W210 E420, but these were very unusual.

I'm sure you're right. I'm scrabbling around in memory and I don't understand this stuff. My car back at that time was a 1998 E55.

But, as I've demonstrated, later E430's, like the 2002, ARE ULEZ compliant, for whatever reason.

Whatever the situation, there's no mod that can be done to economically make the OP's E430 ULEZ compliant, so it's pay the daily ULEZ and/or buy a cheeky little runabout for day to day running about.

All cars registered before March 2001 will be non compliant because there is no emissions information held against the car. Cars registered before March 2001 pay a flat VED based on under or over 1549cc (or something like that). There are plenty of 2001 petrol cars that are ULEZ compliant - the cars registered after March will be compliant and before March not.
Cars registered between 1983 and 2001 are the ones to suffer.

That's odd....because that car comes up as Euro 3 on the checking site I use.....so therefore not ULEZ compliant......
Interesting. I’m using the tfl checker site as i’m in London. As I said in an earlier post, civil servants don’t really give a stuff - it’s a tax generation exercise, so there’s always the possibility of a challenge.

Which site were you looking at?

By George, he's cracked it...
