S211 Sprinter 213CDI, & the new T-class
My brother is trying to convince me, to convince him to buy one of these.

Has anyone any experience of driving\owning one and if so what are their thoughts?

Regards
John

As an occasional use / track car they are fantastic - various engine options to be had. You can probably find a Top Gear clip on YouTube when Clarkson drove the GTR on the Isle of Man :D.

Is he looking to buy a kit then build himself, buy a completed car built by an enthusiast or buy a completed car built by the factory? And at roughly what spec.

I looked (reasonably seriously but not 100%) at buying one a bit of time ago.

Have a look on Pistonheads as there are a few owners there. I know Stig who has a 6.3 beast and videos of the build and driving it....

Sell him your T Class. Much better for (grass) track days. ;)

The daft devil lives in New Zealand so there's no telling what he would about the differing options.

I cant seem to fathom how much one of these actually costs! There seems to be no price for crucial components such as an engine or gearbox?!!!

Err no - that's because you tend to buy them separately to your own specification.

The total build cost can be very difficult to judge as you can vary so much and have to be very careful that you include everything needed if you have to build it to a budget.

I drove one of the very early renault rear axled ones at a kit car day at Donington Park.

Absolutely great fun to drive on a track but i suspect it would have been bloody awful on the road

That day it was only out done by this Rover V8 monster supplied by UVA

you can - i prefered the option of a crate engine - thoughts along the lines of spending £X on the car and saving £x on the engine seemed a little odd

There was an Ultima at VMAX.

Looked a very very nice toy. I think that sums it up. If you can have one for the sake of it and have somewhere to use it, then why not.

I'd second the above suggestion to have a look on Piston Heads for some feedback.

trouble is though you buy a crate engine and then strip it down to tune it adding different cams, pistons, having the heads reworked etc

Sometime buying an old engine gives you a good starting point when all you really want is the crank, case and barrells (says the man who has spent the day building a beetle engine :))

Seen a few at the Ring having fun, the drivers always look thrashed when they get out. One of the famous local racing drivers in my home town has one too.

LS7 crate engine produces 505hp (admittedly 505Americanhp) 470 lbft - this would be sufficent (and reliable) for me ta - at least as a starting point while I got used to the car...

Good luck with the beetle engine! I have managed to strip an engine down once - then just looked at all the parts in front of me in a rather bemused fashion and promptly scrapped the car (this was the plan after anyway - i only stripped it down out of curiosity).
