Guys..

whats the scope for me to upgrade my front and rear lights to that of the new facelifted s class?

i am liking the new leds on the s class, and the new rear lights look less complicated..

is it a simple swap and plug n play or will there be lots of rewiring involved?

Knowing Mercedes as I do, I doubt very much whether they will fit. They seem to design things on purpose so this kind of upgrade is prevented from being done.
It probably can be done, but with a lot of work and mods.

But I might be very wrong....................

W220 and earlier models can't be upgraded with W221 MB lights, wrong shape and size !

I think he has a W221, most manufacturers redesign headlamps and bumpers as its a relatively cheap way of freshening up a model, I couldnt see them changing much hardware wise as the fixing and jig points are quite an expensive tooling mod, however it may require some STAR coding as I bet the voltage is different for the LED's etc.

I thought he had a w220... he didnt say which car he had.

If they put led lights on where there were none below, they will have updated the SAMs controlling them as they would need to understand LED bulbs (or else the bulb failure error will be shown).

I recall looking at the diagrams for a W216 rear light swop and reconned that a new rear lights loom (just from rear sam to rear lights) was probably also needed, thats cheap and easy to fit though (because the connectors on the rear lights were different)

I did the same on my W203, needed the new loom as the connectors on the lights were different. I know that on the W220 the facelift lights have an extra lug / bolt but that could be cut off easily.

I know you've got a W221 so I wouldn't imagine it would be much different. Although as Richard mentioned you may have an issue with the way the lights beave due to LED's being different from normally light bulbs in terms of current draw / voltage etc.

Physically I imagine they're the same. Would be worth checking out the lights on a facelift W221 to see if they still use the same type of light (e.g. LED / bulb for each function)

A "load compensator" (resistor) would take care of the LED problem though.

Yes, yours is a 221, a 211 is the old shape E Class.
