You need a bit Torrent client ( application ) like Vuze . You then need to visit one of the many torrent sites like PirateBay or MiniNova to find the torrents you wish to download .

You download the 'torrent' from the site - this is a very small file which appears on your desktop and is really only a 'pointer' to the download you want . You then open this 'torrent' with your bit torrent client and it proceeds to download the large file via your peers ( other people 'seeding' the torrent ) which can take hours , days or even weeks depending on the number of others 'seeding' or your 'peers' also downloading .

When choosing which of many available torrents for the same material to download , look at the number of 'seeds' - those with more are likely to download more quickly . Also , until you get to know which 'seeders' are 'good' , read the feedback comments on each torrent page before actually downloading .

Good luck .

BTW - hope you have unlimited broadband .

Re the other thread which was just closed by admin , I'd like to point out that there is NOTHING ILLEGAL about the use of Bit Torrent sites in themselves . Infringements only occur when copyright material in uploaded/downloaded - unfortunately this practice is rife , hence the delivery method has been 'tarred with the same brush' .

There are plenty of perfectly legal pieces of shareware , amateur video productions , and no doubt other items that are distributed in this manner because the producers do not have the resources to set up high bandwidth servers . One of the best examples are episodes of 'Star Trek - New Voyages' which are produced as a tribute to the original series by a dedicated cast and crew of enthusiastic volunteers , with the full permissions and cooperation of Majel Roddenberry and copyright owners and freely distributed for download using torrents , some of the original stars have even appeared in episodes ( Walter Koenig & Nichelle Nichols come to mind ) .

For anyone wishing to know the mechanics of HOW to download torrents , for legitimate purposes , there is plenty of information on the home pages of some of the well known client software , as already outlined by myself in my , now deleted , reply on the other thread , which did not imply either approval or disapproval of downloading certain files .

100% agree. Most Linux distributions are available by 'torrent and even Microsoft have a bit-torrent-like architecture sitting underneath some of their update software.

Apologies I will restore your posts to this thread - nothing is ever truly deleted you know ;)

EDIT:
Please feel free to discuss Bit Torrent technology on this thread but please also be aware that it must not contain any discussion about copyright infringement.

Be aware that many illegal bit torrent downloads contain malware of various kinds embeded within them. This particularly applies to downloads that require some form of post download "installation" of an executable program to work rather than pure media files. This doesn't apply to the download client program per se but to the data you download. Just something to be aware of if you chose to "take a walk on the wild side"

A good point !

What about TV episodes?
Well - there's nothing stopping someone from recording them and lending the recording to a friend - so is there any reason why these should not be shared/downloaded - surely it's the same premise?

Also, some TV shows are only available in countries other than the UK - why shouldn't these be available to the UK ?

And finally.. that age old chestnut.. some TV Shows are shown in the US for example and then not shown in the UK until over a year later - why should we have to wait.. and in some cases they even pull it from being shown in the UK just before it was promised to be shown.

We have to wait because there's a chain of payment, ie TV company to TV company... then down to actors and tea boy etc. If you get it from America releases, it means someone over here isn't paying for it and thus it would have been made in the first place, or if its any good they wont be able to afford a second season.

That's not to say I don't agree with the timing issue, but hey they get hurricanes over there and I don't want them early.
