Used car expectations

Every car and every motorcycle I've sold privately I've tried hard to describe accurately, and set a realistic price. I tell anyone who phones up that if they think they're going to come along and make a stupid offer then they're wasting their own time as well as mine. I've always managed to sell at my asking price.
“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

When you say promptly - out of interest - what do you mean?

I don't expect a reply within minutes but the same day would be great and within 24 hours or next working day would be acceptable. Is that unreasonable? Often it's been days or not at all when I've made a genuine enquiry

I assume you mean your contact is via email? Is your contact within the working week?

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect even a holding email “we’ll get back to you by XYZ” within a day or two but - speaking from experience - salespeople tend to be quite literal in their thinking “will what I’m about to do get me a sale?” and if, in their experience, they get more sales from folk who pick up the phone and actually call them than someone who sends an email then that’s where they’ll concentrate their efforts.

In my own experience of sales - and in my own personal opinion - those that email tend to be fishing for information as opposed to actually wanting to buy anything (not saying this is you by the way).

I now direct my own sales staff to ask “when are you looking to purchase?” because otherwise it’s just a talking shop - I’ve got plenty of information brochures they can have quite gladly have if they’re not looking to have a pump installed for another year...
