Car
Audi TT RS 2.5 , Zanussi Wd12: - LG Combi Multiwave - Swan 9 slice toaster with removable crumb tray
Wife put her car for sale on E bay as Spares & reapir.
It was sorned & has no Mot.
A guy came around & saw me last Friday & paid half the money & said he would be booking it in for an Mot on Monday & would pay the rest.
So he does not show up but comes around in the daytime on Thursday , gave the Wife the other half of the money. She signed the V5 & he filled in his part. She had to move her car to get the old one out, as she moved her car out backing up the road another car came up & she was stuck behind this car, the guy who bought her old car drives off, problem is he has the V5!
Wife phones him up , mobile on answer phone, so she leaves it for a while & texts him asking him to bring the V5 back or can I (When I get home) come & collect it as he is local-ish, no answer, she phones him again to day & got him on the phone, she asked for his address etc & he said he could not give it to her & hung up ? So now she is fretting about all sorst...is she right?
She contacted the police who were not interested, DLVA was shut ...she is panicking ,even though its not her fault ?

Get a crime ref from the Police then relax. Nothing more to be done. You have done nothing wrong.

I wonder if you be able to get a crime reference if the police aren't interested?

I would phone the DVLA and explain what has happened on Tuesday.

They haven't stolen the car as they have paid for it.

You have notified the police (I would have made a note of who you spoke to and when).

Might be worth contacting them again on 101 to see if they concur or wait for one on here - there are some members who are cops.

The worst that can happen I would have thought is they run up some speeding / parking tickets or the car gets involved in something.

Should that happen, you would have to re-involve the police.

She shouldn't panic as she has done nothing wrong as said.

Thanks guys, have contacted Police & they have given her a logged number.

Will contact DLVA Tuesday. Thank you all again.

I just don't understand why he would bother to not give her the information ie name & address, up to the car moving point he was in the process of filling in the V5 & handing it back?
She has had a 3 points twice over a few years & has a clean licence & wants to keep it that way for Insurance etc.

Thank you all again.:thumb:

Anything incurred can be sorted out - it's just going to potentially be a bit of hassle should that anything like that happen.

It may not...

My dad once traded in his Ford Orion many many moons ago.

Cops rang up to say it had been involved in "an incident" and was he still the owner.

Of course he wasn't and that was the end of it - never heard anything else.

I guess the buyer has something to hide but who knows what.

Remember to inform your insurers the car is no longer yours. That is critical when you sell a car.

It was sorned, so probably not insured.

Do you think so Renault? I'll have a figmentary fiver on it with you that it was. But that's just my 'gut feeling' because I keep my car(s) insured during the six months they are SORNed each year. I always think 'what if the garage collapses' or 'what if lightening strikes the trees next to the Honda'? To be honest not sure why I do because either of the cars would be written off by the merest tap...

You can get "SORN insurance" or something to that effect. - It's a reduced rate because you're only covered for fire, theft or damage since the car can't be involved in an accident on the road.

Can't say that I've ever bothered with it myself.

Okay, so police came around & said it was parked on the road a few miles away & we went through it with him & he got on the phone to this guy there & then! Gave him a few harsh questions & within 2 hours the V5 was "posted" through our front door...Sigh aren't our policemen wonderful...He said the guy must be a fool as now he has to explain why he kept a car on the road with no tax, no Insurance & no Mot, also he has to prove that he did have it booked into a gagrage last Thursday... They said there has been a spate of people either buying cheap estate cars or stealing them & using them for ram raiding shops ?! I said a Diesel estate (???), he replied "you'd be surprised ".
Oh Lisa you owe Renault a fiver...the car was sorned because it had damage & the mot was almost out, so I was selling as "Spares or repair"...cough up...:D

At the end of the day , I wouldn't have fretted at all about it , nor involved the police .

Your obligation is simply to inform DVLA that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle - this can be done quite simply by writing a letter informing them of the date and time of the sale ( the time isn't that important but covers you in case something happened soon after the transfer ) , and that the buyer did not provide his details - you have no legal responsibility to chase this .

The buyer may have trade or any vehicle insurance , so other than parking an unlicensed vehicle on the road may not have broken the law - no one's problem but his .

Lack of a V5 isn't a major problem either - lots of people will be unable to find it when they come to sell a car , if it is on the day of sale , no time to get another .

The new owner can simply apply for the documents when ready to put car on the road .

That's amazing.

When I had a whole car nicked the police didn't bother to come out, when you had a piece of paper to do with a car that a bloke legitimately bought from you & paid you for they are all over it!

Where do you live?

Not near you obviously

It would have been as easy for the new buyer to give a false name and address on the V5, as to put none at all. So no need to notify the police, though of course the DVLA and Insurance need to be notified.

But the actions of the buyer (driving off before the end of the transaction, refusing later to give an address) certainly arouse suspicion and so for peace of mind and being community spirited (crime prevention) I can see why the OP's wife did.
