Vacuum leak

When i switch the engine off there is a hissing / escape of air coming from a vacuum set up immediately behind the windscreen washer resevoir lasting for 30 seconds. I could not see anything wrong with the pipes (one end feeds back into the main engine block). Does anyone know what this vacuum is for and whether it can be taken apart etc to be checked further?
