My E320 cdi had it's faulty Rad replaced under warranty along with oil cooler two years ago with all fluids, gearbox fluids etc at a cost of 5k.

Thing is they replaced it with another Valeo unit.

Should I be worried or have the since improved the orginal design?

If it was affected by the Valeo-rad-leaking-into-the-transmission issue, then it's a worry...

If the problem with the Valeo is different - and your car is not affected by the Valeo-rad-leaking-into-the-transmission issue, then should be fine IMO - Valeo have been making decent rads for many years, I have used their rads on other cars before with no problems. It seems that the Valeo-rad-leaking-into-the-transmission issue only affected a specific batch (like the Delphi Diesel injectors issue, i.e. Delphi makes great injectors for many manufacturers and the recent design fault was a really one-off for them).

I wouldnt risk using another Valeo... Who replaced it?

I Think it was replaced due to tests confirming coolant in gearbox although very small amount.

But even though it was caused by a faulty rad, surely Valeo would of sorted a new design by 2007? I am not one to worry, or even worry about this. Just curious I guess.

On the W211 they sorted it by 09/2003 if I remember right. I've understood that there is no other part from MB other than Valeo (the new one of course now). There are after market options from Nissens at least, I've heard.

There is, Behr make them.

The OP mentions an oil cooler so the diversion from the rad to the gbox should be cut off. A decent MB specialist is who needs to look at this car and assess. I'd change it if not cut off to the box, with a separate box cooler and cut off the rads cooling to the box
