Blimey. getting quotes for insurance for a new van and they are NOT cheap. Twice as much as my current car for the cheapest. Ok its a new van but its a van not a Ferrari. The quotes for my impending C63 are cheaper!
Presumably you're using the van for business though.
Ours is social & domestic only, but plenty of companies assume that any van is going to be used for work (whatever you say on the application). Hence the high rates.
Direct Line was £1676!
Problem is to do with NCD. I have 9+ years but that is being used on my car and nobody seems willing to mirror it onto the van. Low risk postcode,no claims and no accidents.
BTW the quote for the C63 was £614 so they obviously dont see me as a big risk.
£117 here for an old van.
Fully comp, named drivers over 40 and business usage.
The £1500 difference must be mainly profit.
There must be a way to drop your premium.
Speaking to someone with half a brain would be a start.
NCD is 'per policy' - you would have the same basic issue if you got a second car. Can you get a discount on a van policy from whoever your car is insured with (to offset having no NCD)?

Not strictly true.At least for me. I have another car that has had the NCD mirrored onto it. In fact i am also the main driver on my companies van and they 'took into account' my NCD on my car when they quoted. Or so they said. Maybe i am hoping for too much.
I phoned Admiral - who i am insured with - who said they would be delighted to insure me and redirected me to their 'van insurance department'. However said department is in fact their 'sister' company Gladiator who were not interested that i had a policy with Admiral and would not apply any discounts. Their words not mine.

Those are discounts/incentives those particular companies offer to get your business though, rather than a 'right'. You only earn proper NCD (which is fully recognised/transferrable) on each policy you hold.
Hi there, I've just joined the forum, nice to meet you all. I was just having a nosey about the forum and saw what you'd written here, I don't drive a van myself, I just have my 450SEL but a good friend of mine owns a van. He had an accident in it about 13 months ago, his insurance was up for renewal and his insurer (can't remember who it was) wanted to up his premiums understandably. He couldn't really afford to pay it, I heard many a rant about it down our local boozer, I think in the end he got in touch with a company called iVan Van Insurance and they managed to sort him out. If you need anything else feel free to ask me, I'll speak to him later tonight and see if I can find out what they quoated him for you. In the meantime here is their site: http://www.ivaninsurance.co.uk
