Hi folks,

Have a 2007 E 280 CDi with just under 250k on it. The car has developed a vibration that I put down to engine/gearbox mounts and I changed these at the weekend. Essentially any acceleration above 40 mph resulted in the car vibrating heavily.

Whilst the majority of the vibration has disappeared and visually checking the engine as I accelerate, replacing the mounts has clearly had an impact on the problem overall, however I am still suffering a vibration at around 40 mph which clears as I accelerate, and is not present under 40 mph.

The car has had the gearbox serviced earlier this year by an indy, tyres were balanced last week, front and back and obviously mounts changed at the weekend.

So having attended to all known fault that could cause this, I am at a bit of a loss as to what could still be causing a vibration.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Dougie

My brother had very similar issues with his W124 lately and it turned out to be the driveshaft. Might be worth having a look.

Obviously not....
Engine gearbox is only the first half of the drivetrain - propshaft, diff, driveshafts and wheel bearings the second.
There's also the possibility of it being exhaust related.

Hi Pharell, thanks for the reply. When you say the driveshaft, do you mean bracket/bushes etc or the actual driveshafts was goosed?

Thanks,

Dougie

Thanks Bellow, diff bush was highlighted as being near perished the last time it was in the garage, could this be the cause? Checked the driveshaft and it's not loose or rattling..will check the exhaust!

I had a very similar issue annoying vibration going through what felt like the floor could also feel it through the seat. Turned out I was not giving it enough 'gas' as the Americans say. I was being far to gentle with accelerater pedal causing the car to stay in higher gear. Started giving it a bit more (my bit more is probably everyone else's normal' never had the vibration since. Next time you feel the vibration give it a bit more so it drops a gear and see if it mysteriously goes away

Yes.
As much as the engine and gearbox are trying to rotate around their shafts when under power, the diff has to be restrained from rotating around the prop shaft and the driveshafts - the driveshaft torque reaction being the larger. That is a lot of load for a bush and a perished/failing one will permit vibration to pass to the chassis.
As ever, it can't be known to be the cause until replaced with a newer/better one.
