Hi I'm new to this site and wonder if anyone has had a similar problem as mine?
I have just bought a Mercedes C180 estate 1997. It has a vibration that comes in at around 45mph and does not go away even up to 80/90 mph which seems to be coming from the rear or drive train. It comes up through the seats and makes driving very uncomfortable. The car was fitted with new discs before I got it. We have tried wheel balance and a total wheel change. We have fitted new prop shaft centre bearing. We have fitted new rear shocks. Still now change. There is a slight up and down play in the rear drive shafts going into the diff but really only
1-2 mm. If anyone has any suggestions I would be really gratetful.

Just a guess but maybe the rear gearbox mount is shot.

Try changing gear to see if it's engine or road speed related.

Also check for tyre and wheel roundness.

Try checking the wheels if they are alloys. Mine was bent after it smacked a pavement and i did not know but vibrations started about 40-45mph and until i stuck in the spare, n0thing worked . just check that first

Thanks for your suggestions.
The car is automatic and I have changed down a gear but this has no effect on vibration. The car is fitted with alloy wheels and have had them ballanced. We then put a complete set of wheels of another merc on and still the same vibration. The rear gearbox mounting will be checked, so thanks for that.
Just before I got the car the steering wheel had to be taken off and realigned as it was not level when the car was going straight, do you think this means that the tracking could be out and if so would that cause a vibration?
Cheers

I'm by no means an expert on this and people here will advise better but I'm pretty sure removing the steeringwheel and realining it with the wheels in the 'straight ahead' position is NOT the way to resolve an issue with traction/steering. You need to get the car on one of those LASER quided qizzmos to asses the wheel alignment.
For the steering to have been out by so much in the first place suggests a front wheel might have taken a bit of a whack, so maybe the problems lies there somewhere?

I'm sure people here will be able to point you in the right direction. Good luck with it.

Thank you very much for your advice, the car will be checked again this week and I will be sure to let you know the outcome.

It was effectively steering from the back of the car (thrust angle was out). The symptom was a general wandering around the lane on fast motorway bends.

Now, its rock solid. Well worth doing.

A long shot but I had a similar problem with an Audi a few years back. It turned out to be a broken rubber exhaust pipe support. Check to see if all the supports are in place.

Doesn't bother me, I'm not the type to get paranoid over those details.

I'm going to do a bit of travelling and going into London a few times in the next week. Could do with getting about a bit and don't fancy the conjestion charge.

Is it Ok to borrow your registration for a while??;)

I don't really understand all this secretive behavior with registration numbers. I could pass by some dodgy geezer in the street tomorrow, who could write down my reg number. How is it any more dangerous on here????

These days you can even take down the chassis number of anyone's car from the windscreen. any multi-storey is full of them!!

ok fine - doesn't bother me that much either - but with all this bad press about identity theft, I have started shredding all my addressed stuff and you do hear of car cloning, there is a thread on here currently............LINK ........................

........................................................Wouldn't take much of a whizz kid to start searching for mercedes cars of the right model/age and colour to clone your car - all it takes is a few hours on t'internet and if you happen to hit the right forum;)

:) If anyone wants a reg no for a
specific make, type model of vehicle then either stand on a street corner for a few minutes or log onto Autotrader. I'm with Parrot on this but I must confess to blotting out our own numbers :o :o

Regards,
John

I honestly couldn't care less. The car is parked outside, I know where it is at all times, if somebody wants to copy my plates and run speed cameras, whatever.

I'm not going to get paranoid about it. Bills and letters go in the bin, or on the fire.

If the baliffs turned up outside my door because of identity theft it would actually be quite good fun :)
