Hi everyone,

Background of the problem:

A few weeks ago, my 2006 Vito wouldn't start in the morning. Luckily, there's a garage near my house, I called them and they towed it to their garage, they connected booster charger to jump start my van. It did start but the battery/alternator light and the engine management light came on. The mechanic said I needed a new battery. I've had a new battery fitted, still same lights on in the dash. Then I was advised it was the alternator, got the alternator reconditioned (new regulator) and the lights are still on. The original problem (van not starting) still existed. I then took it to a Mercedes commercial specialists, they put it on star diagnostic machine and was told the camshaft sensor was faulty, had it replaced and the van started first time every time until yesterday morning, when it decided not to start. Jump started the van and took it to the Mercedes specialists and the camshaft sensor was faulty (again) so they replaced it.

Coming back to the warning lights, when I start the van for the first time every day, the battery light and eml stay on, but when the van warms up and turn the engine off then on again the eml goes out but the battery light remains on.

Something weird I discovered was when I turn the wipers on to the second position the battery light goes out, and comes back on when the wipers are switched off. Also, when the wipers are turned on to position one, the battery light still stays on but the heater blower motor slows down for a second and then back to normal speed for a second and then slows down and this cycle continues until the wiper is on position one. Also, with the wiper on position one, the headlights go dim for a second and then normal for a second and so on, and this happens in sync with the heater blower motor but when the wipers are turned to position two the battery light goes out and all the electrics then work fine ie heater blower motor, headlights.

I've had the alternator tested after getting it reconditioned, and it's showing 14v or thereabouts when idle.

I'm worried the ecu, bcu, sam unit or CAN might be at fault. How do I go about checking if these are fine. The Mercedes "specialists" I went to were only concerned about the money, they didn't carry out extensive diagnosis.

It's really stressing me out and I would really appreciate any input I get from you guys.

P.S. I'm in Huddersfield, so if anyone can please recommend me a reputable garage local to me I'll be really grateful.

Many thanks
