Vito ASR and hand brake problems

Hi everyone,

I have a Vito 2006 109 and I took the van for an MOT and it's failed on two things:

1) ASR doesn't work. When I push the 'ASR off' button next to the hazard light switch, the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside it does not light up in the dash to say it's been deactivated. (Could it be the button/switch that's faulty)?
2) Hand brake tell tale sign doesn't light up in the dash when the hand brake is applied.

Both of the above lights come on in the dash when ignition is on position 2 but when the engine is started neither of the lights stay on.

The MOT tester said new laws introduced this year meant that every single feature and warning lights need to work to pass the MOT. The van passed the MOT last year with the same 'faults' and they've been like that before I even bought the van so I don't know the history.

I phoned the dealers and they quoted £80+VAT just to diagnose, which I don't really want to pay.

Can anyone please shed light on this or point me in the right direction.

Any help is much appreciated.

Many thanks.

You need it on a Star at MB to find what is the problem, £80 for a quote sounds a bit steep.
Do you have a MB commercial dealer?
If you have then just go down and see the foreman and he will do it for a pint!

Diagnosis for this type of fault could take some time. It needs to be plugged into a Star as suggested. On some of the late Vitos you can code the ASR out of the cluster to get around ASR faults. Hence the lack of warning lights etc.

He's wrong - these issues are not a fail till 1st April. They are only supposed to be reported as an advisory until then.

Also ... the MOT refers only to Electronic Stability Control (ESC or ESP) and ABS.

ASR is neither - it's traction control. You cannot turn the ESP off in a 639 Vito - so unless there's a warning light showing (as detailed in the handbook) you would have to assume it's functioning OK.

MOT testing manuals and guides

I found when I changed the cluster for the later advanced type the ESP showed a warning and nothing worked until it was calibrated on the star, so the brake light waring light not working might stop the ESP working.
It's properly no more than a sensor but you will need Star to find it and then clear the code.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions so far.
I live in Huddersfield so does anyone know or recommend any Mercedes specialist garages in surrounding areas please? (Not main dealers)

Many thanks
