W 169 COMAND question

Hi Guys, please forgive my very first posting being a daft question.
Have put a deposit on a '55 A180CDI and THEN joined this forum...DUH.
COMAND, do they ALL have it or is it an optional extra?
How will I know if I have it?

Hi and welcom.
Comand is an optional item
If you look at it see if it has a MAP button on it as a comand would have this on it.

If it looks like the on on this picture then it has an Audio 20

Got the phone keypad on the rhs, "ON" button where shown and the bank of controls above ON.
Sorry to appear thick but didn't go through it button by button.
Its also got what looks like a CD storage unit, about five/six CD's, in the glove box but don't know where the changer, if fitted, would be mounted.

The glovebox is one of the normal locations for a changer - so what you are looking at COULD be a changer - otherwise it might be in the boot - or you might not have one at all.
Changers were an expensive optional extra - mind you so is a COMAND unit (£2000+) .

A COMAND unit has a screen which is bigger than the Audio20 unit and has a CD slot above the screen (I think the audio20 CD slot is below the screen).
However the DEFINITIVE way to tell what your car has is that a COMAND unit has two extra buttons......... One marked MAP and the other marked NAV - which the audio20 unit doesn't have.

If the top 2 buttons on the left are radio and disc and the button under the radio button is not called navi you have audio 20. The phone buttons are for telephone pre wire if your car has it.

I doubt very much whether a 55 registered car will have a COMAND unit with an SD card slot.
I thought those were only introduced a year or so ago.

It's not a problem, I'm ignorant of the benefits, or otherwise, of COMAND over an Audio 20 so I'll just enjoy what I've got.

Oops missed the 55 plate bit. Still if it was Comand it would have the navi button and look like the one in verytalldave's post.

Audio20 unit is the basic unit fitted as standard in the A Class like yours.
Its a single CD/radio unit. It has a few other little gizmos, buts thats basically it.

I believe the audio50 unit was a cost-extra option on the A Class and its not impossible you may have that. They look similar but the audio50 has limited satnav capabilities - so its a nice bonus if thats what's in your car.

COMAND on the other hand is a full blown entertainment and communications system.
It has MANY functions, but the main one is that is is a proper split-screen satnav unit.
Its not a perfect system, and some here prefer other makes. But it is a good functional satnav unit and mine has never let me down.
Its also an interface for your phone with full voice control if its enabled and it can also play DVD's and have TV when the optional tuner is fitted.
Its audio quality is also better than the standard audio20 unit.
