Hi all firstly as I'm a newbie not only to this forum but to Mercedes - I've owned many classics over the years but this is my first MB!

I've had a 1970 220 W115 for only a couple of weeks and have been blessed with a shattered windscreen....

I've got rid of all the mess and my insurance company have sourced a screen, but the fitting chap says I need to remove the black A-post trim pads and the ones at the leading edge of the headlining above the windscreen to get access.

Can someone advise me how to get them off without damaging anything - i.e. location of trim clips, safest place to lever, etc.?
Or indeed if there's no need to remove the trim after all...

Thanks in advance! :)

I used to have the same year and model of car ( bought new by my dad ) but never had a problem with the windscreen , until the car was written off in a head-on collision . My dad also had a toughened glass windscreen shatter on a W114 250/8 but just sent it into Mercedes to be fixed as that car was only about a week old at the time .

The windscreens on these cars are retained by the rubber surround and not bonded as on newer cars . I'm sure the interior padded trim does just pry out and I can only advise to go carefully and see where it seems to be fixed . I guess the interior trim probably does probably need to come out as the windscreen will need to be fitted into the rubber seal , complete with garnish moulding , before being offered up to the windscreen aperture and the 'lip' of the seal coaxed into the aperture from within ......

If the fitter has not worked on a car of this type before , the job may be better entrusted to a classic car specialist who has experience of doing this job before - very few 'modern' dealers will have the neccessary skills .

The only other person on this forum who probably even knows what one of these cars is , is Popuptoaster who has a W114 280CE but I haven't seen him post here for a few weeks .

How bizarre that the fitter should require you to do half of the work yourself

Shouldn't the insurance company be providing you with someone who can replace the screen and take care of any anciliary work necessary as part of the process?

Many thanks for the info Pontoneer.

Yes Rob I totally agree, I was in 'if you want it doing properly (and carefully) do it yourself' mode but I've changed up into 'what exactly do I pay the insurance company for?' mode...

I'll be giving them an ultimatum tomorrow that involves the threat of a large invoice from an MB dealership.

Make sure you take pictures of your trim before the fitting to compare with if you suspect any damage.

I doubt parts will be that easy to come by.

Thanks for your advice chaps, the windscreen was finally replaced yesterday along with brand new bright trim underneath (at their expense).
