Evening all,
Before I get into droning on about my ridiculous project
I want to apologise to the administrator for posting my stuff in separate volumes as apposed to following it along the same thread? I'm not that sharp when it comes to knowing how to do this, so do I post a new thread or a new post? how do I do it? and where is the button for it?
Not trying to be sarcastic or disrespectful, I just genuinely don't know, and I couldn't reply to the administrator who pointed this out, as the page said I couldn't reply to him?
Can anyone tell me how to do this please, without my next drone disappearing into a corner where even I can't find it, many thanks...
Right, back to the project, I may seem to be stringing it out, but to understand the outcome, and maybe get good suggestions of what to do at the end, I thought I would write about this project with some detail, hence the story in parts, apologies if its a bit tedious.
Part 4...
With many emails between me and the expert discussing flywheels, clutches, convertor plate, EMS, fuel and air distribution etc, etc. I was sending him money and parts bought from various places, directly to his place, in order to keep the momentum going.
It was decided that a new purpose made flywheel would be a good idea rather than chance a second hand modified one. So a TTV Racing one was ordered to the specifications that the expert had sent them, once done it was sent down to him to for the clutch to be matched accordingly, and I picked it up a couple of months later.
It is a thing of beauty and I still open the box just to stare at it, obviously I don’t get out much or have a healthy varied life…
I managed to get hold of the rest of the exhaust system, genuine Mercedes, and at a surprisingly good price, baring in mind that the new system would be attached to the standard used Euro spec manifolds and down pipes, both in good condition (just needing a coating later).
The new crossover mid-section pipework and new rear single box with twin outlets being all that was left to complete it, with very little mods required and apparently giving a nice sound without being overly loud, offensive or tinny like stainless ones can be, but none of the system would win a lightness competition.
I had always wanted a V8 sounding right foot, and I was building a Mercedes muscle car cruiser, not a track racer, so a little extra weight didn’t matter, but a quality sound did.
About this time five cardboard boxes turned up with shiny 15” Maxilites wheels within, on went the tyres, and on to the car they went. Finally, it had the look and the tyre choice I’d been after.
As much as I liked the 14” Fuch forged wheels, their incredible lightness and strength was hard to beat, but tyre choice was limited, and I wanted the wider wheel/tyre look.
Apparently Fuch did make a limited amount of 15” versions of the Mercedes Barocks, but these are rare as hens teeth with a price to match…And finding quality second hand aftermarket period 15" ones are a) difficult b) no guarantee to be damage free c) nearly the same price as a set of new Maxilites.
Please correct me if I have this Fuch info wrong, there are people on this forum with far more knowledge on the classic stuff than I have.
Though ‘only’ cast aluminium, the Maxilites are well made and look right in a OE Mercedes kind of way…lovely…and yes I actually wanted the spare 5th wheel the same and to hell with the wallet, until the bank statement dropped through the door.
Around 2016 onwards, progress on the project started to slow down and falter, the expert had a run of bad luck which had put my stuff on the shelf along with others, and I was just about to get myself into a whole mess by the end of the year, little did I know how messy…
Next up: the light at the end of the tunnel is a big train coming my way…
