I have the opportunity to use this car in the scrappage scheme to part fund my wifes new car. However, as the car is in such lovely condition it seems only right to offer it up for sale first in case someone wants to save it from this fate!.
The car was bought direct from the factory in Germany by its first owner in 1990 ( Note the "heritage" grill ). I bought the car in February 2008 from an independant Trader in Bedford. If you need to know I can check how many owners its had in between but its around 5 or so.
MOT & Tax to Feb 2010
Mileage shows around 84k but the records show that it had a faulty clock changed around 40k. Now, the history up to this point shows clearly as being in KM, and then afterwards in Miles. However there is some debate over wether or not the odometer itself would have originally been in Miles (given its RHD) or not, even if the clock was primarily KM. So with this in mind the total mileage is somewhere between 105k and 125K.
Work done:
Early in my ownership I had a new OE Mercedes set of leads and distributer cap and rotor arm etc replaced. Also the tensioner belt was changed at the same time to stop a knocking sound. The car has had spark plugs and Oil / Filter/ Air filter change as well. I changed the temperture sensor and the cold start valve thing as well.
The interior is lovely black leather, and the arm rest has had the piping re-trimmed where it became cracked and broken
I have fitted a Kenwood Stereo with Ipod connection in the Glovebox, and Rainbow front speakers. Also there is an aftermarket wooden gearknob which is a pretty good match for the interior.
All the tyres have been replaced at various stages from the date of purchase, so some have less than 1000 miles on them and others no more than 4000, as I havent done a great deal of mileage in the time Ive owned it.
I replaced the charcoal filter in the front wing and I put a new battery and new fuses in it a few months ago.
The number plate C16RDS comes with the car, and a number plate company said this alone is worth £800!!, of coure they are talking a load of old toss. I said go ahead and sell it then and funny enough havent had a buyer yet . So Its worth zip in my view, but if you have a squint and own a card shop or its your initials then maybe its of some value.
History:
There is alot of documented History/ Mots etc, both from Mercedes earlier in its life, and from various independant / Quick fit types / One man bands etc afterwards.
Negatives & Work required
Gearbox - When going forward its absolutley fine, kicks down correctly and is very smooth as it should be. When the engine is cold the reverse works perfectly fine as well, HOWEVER, when the car is warm and you try to reverse it often does not react to the throttle immediately, then jumps into action. I drive around this by shading the brake until reverse is fully engaged, but this is just me, ideally the box needs to be stripped and repaired. This fault is not wholly un-common and I was quoted by a Gearbox specialist in Charlton a range of £600-£1200 +VAT to repair. They could'nt be sure exactly until they remove the box and examine it. Its been suggested that sourcing a replacement 5 speed box and getting it fitted for around £300 would be a cheaper solution, dependant on what the box cost you.
Fan - When I took the car to have the erratic idle looked at and fixed ( a simple adjustment in the end) the MB mechanic suggested the Fan viscous coupling needed replacing.
Head Gasket - Like many a 124, there is a small weeping of oil from the front of the engine, which means that at some stage a Head gasket would need to be fitted (or rather a NEW one, it does have have one already!)
Jacking Point - The passenger side jacking point appears to be rusty inside, its still usable, but rusty. The drivers side one is very good indeed.
Screen - There is a degree of de-lamination in the corner of the windscreen, but the rear screen is absolutely fine.

Price?, as scrappage its worth £2000 to me, so if anyone wants it as it stands for that they are more than welcome. Alternatively I could remove the stereo and speakers and knock £100 off the price?.
Not exactly the most attractive offer , but if someone really wants one of these, and is willing to spend some money over the next few years on it then it may make sense to someone.
To be honest I dont really expect anyone will want it at this price, and if that proves to be the case then I shall try and strip whatever usefull parts I can get away with , just prior to handing it in.
Cheers
Simon
