Just bought a 300d estate on Ebay. Only problem is it needs a new gearbox. Bit of an impulse buy really, admired them for ages and figured it it doesn't make sense for what I paid I can always sell bits off it and and break even. Don't want to do that though, cos they're great cars and theres few enough around as it is.

I'm not scared of getting my hands dirty and have access to good garage facilities (ramps, hoist etc) as well as a knowledgeable friend who can help me remove/refit the box.

The car has just over 200k on it, so I think it could be worth spending the money to recondition the box rather than grabbing a secondhand one and hoping for the best.
Assuming I remove the box and take it somewhere for a rebuild before refitting myself, what sort of money am I looking at realistically?

If I was to go the secondhand route, does the 'box have to come from a similar vintage 300d or are any of the bigger petrol engined W124s potential donors?

Great forums, been trawling for info and learning lots!

I don't know the answer, just wanted to say welcome! (from another W124 owner).

300TD or E300 Diesel? They have different gearboxes

I'd go the secondhand route. A rebuild will cost £1200-ish. I'd try to source a box with the same part number as yours from the same type of car - the ratios and torque convertor are likely to be different between petrol & diesel cars

I have a 722.435 for an E300 Diesel if you want one

Just to add...I think I know the whereabouts of a written off LHD W124 diesel of a similar age. Does anyone know if the gearbox is likely to be the same?

I don't know the mileage or even whether the owner is willing to part with it, but it's a possibility I will be exploring if he still has it.

Hmmm, good question.
The Ebay ad said E300, but who knows how accurate that is. It's a K plate estate and a 12 valve.

What mileage and much would you be asking for the box?

That should make the box a 722.415 version, which is the same for the saloon.

The differential ratios are different to give different gearing.

was that the green one in north yorkshire, if it is a freind who used to work for mercedes and specialised in gearboxes went to look at it, and told me about it, as i have a gearbox

There was also a red one last week with a stated gearbox fault.
