W124 300D vibration

Have just bought 1995 W124 300d which has vibration problem on starting & stopping engine and to a lesser extent whilst running. 101k on clock. Any suggestions regarding cause and rectifying the problem ? (have had a W124 E200 before - smooth as silk!)

It may be the engine mounting(s), which are easy enough to check with a specialist 'depth' gauge.

Shaking when stopping & starting is engine mounts, as suggested. Just replace them. About £65 each from MB

I find most, if not all, of the E300 Diesels I drive have knackered engine mounts. Replacing them improves the car no end

Whilst you're at it check the front propshaft doughnut as well. They wear over time and eventually break up

My W124 was shaking all the time recently when starting and stopping and the engine mounts were replaced today. I forgot how smooth the car was until I drove it home this evening. Feels like a newer engine
