Hi.

I have a 1988 W124 200 fitted with what i believe to be a stromberg 175cdt carb however it does have Pieburg stamped on it.
Erm, it isn't much of a problem to be honest but it is concerning. When starting from cold i have no help from the choke/cold start valve, it seems i have to engage it by raising the revs manually then disengaging it by a quick blip of the accelerator.

Is this normal? Is it a kind of semi auto choke arrangment? or do i have a faulty componant in need of replacment?

Thanks in advance.

Many automatic chokes require to be "set" before starting the car by depressing the accelerator pedal to the floor momentarily before releasing it completely followed by then turning the engine over to start. Automatic chokes are quite"finiky" in this way. If you get it wrong then its difficult to retrieve the situation. I am not familiar with this particular mercedes set up but the exact procedure should be detailed in the owners manual. Having said all this autochoke carbs+linkages are notorious for going out of adjustment- particularly with age so maybe you have a fault? Try this other forum http://www.mercedes190.co.uk/ The 190 of that vintage shares the same engine as your car and you may find some useful info there also.
