Hi All,

As you may know I am selling my W124 coupe, however just the other day the engine started making a rattling noise and I would like to get this fixed before selling so that I know that the car is in full working order before it sells. So I opened the bonnet and the noise seemed to come from the fan, but after closer examination I pinned the sound to the belt tensioner shock absorber (I used a long screwdriver and listned through it) So my question is how easy is it to change the belt tensioner shock absorber and guide? Is there a how to I can follow?

Thank in advance,

K

This might help depending on the age of your car? Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums You should be able to do it in situ but sometimes difficult to get at the lower bolt attaching the shock absorber to the tensioner body. The design of these tensioners changed so much over the years you really need to know exactly which design you are dealing with to give an accurate answer.

Have you checked the timing chain tensioner? Mine stuck the other day causing a rattle at idle but no noise under load

Where can I find the timing chain tensioner? I will check that when I get home today.

Thanks,

Ok guys, as i'm on annual leave from work I thought i'd fix the noisey engine problem I have.

RESOLUTION:

I changed the tensioner shock absorber and its all sorted. On closer inspection of the old shock it had play in the strut section which was knocking. Causing that awful noise.

Well the car is back to normal now, and still for sale ;)

Also changed the tensioner shock on my dads 190e (completely different procdeure to the W124) and also changed his back box as he had a hole in it. Both MBs are now back to tip top condition :D
