Hello everyone

I have a 1995 E200 auto. Is it normal for it to be at 4000rpm when at 85mph? Its at just under 4000rpm when at 80mph. I think it may be a little high but please enlighten me. Thanks!

My E250 5 speed manual sits at 3000 rpm at 70mph in 5th gear

Yours presumably is a 4 speed auto ?

It does strike me as a tad higher than I'd have expected , but perhaps the E200 has lower gearing .

I had a 2.3 granada auto that reved at around 3500 at 70 and there was nothing wrong with it. I suppose it had a low diff in it to make up for the lack of grunt

Seem to recall the family '94 E200 auto being at 4000rpm at 80mph in 3rd gear rather than 4th, although this was many years ago so don't quote me.

If so it sounds like it's not hitting 4th. Should be easy enough to count the gear changes? I think these late model 16v W124s set off in 1st gear rather than the older ones that used to pull away in 2nd unless you hit full throttle.

sounds right to me. it's 136ps petrol engine in heavy car, it's all about gearing. mine 300d 12v will be close to 100mph at 4000rpm, even though it has less ps.

Having thought about it the old 638 vito would have been at similar revs, at a true 85 you would be around 3800/4000

Yes it is a 4 speed auto. I kinda have the feeling its not going into 4th but I did try counting the changes (assuming it pulls away in 1st gear) and it went through all the changes. Engine kinda sounds high.
I've changed the engine oil/filter recently and the gearbox oil & filter.

All older Mercedes were under-geared to help acceleration at the expense of fuel economy 20mph/1000 revs seems about right.
