Hi All

I'm new here, but hope you can help!

I'm thinkning about buying an 1993-95 E220 auto. Not sure which body style yet, condition will probably be more important.

I've been looking on various car comparison sites to see how the E220 matches my current car for petrol use. Most sites are a bit vague, but they tell me the E220 is about the same as my current car for economy, but my current car is a small Rover 1.6litre auto! So I can't quite believe it's true.

it would really help me if someone could tell me how much is costs, or how many litres it normally takes when you fill an E220 with fuel, and how many miles that would normally let you do. Knowing the size of the tank, or what MPG it should do doesn't help much. But it would help a lot if someone could answer my question based on what they do every time they fill up.

For example, my current car takes about 40 litres to fill each week, at a cost of £50 locally, which normally lets me do about 300-320 miles depending on how I drive. I expect the E220 will use more fuel, but if it's not too much more, I'd be tempted to buy!

Thanks

Rich.

Hi there Rich and welcome to the forum. The 4 cyl 124 are not that economic as is a heavy car.
The 220 will take 62l and you`ll get around 300 miles maxx
You`ll get about 400 on a long run though

Well VP500, MPG is the only way I can answer and my '94 E220 estate does on average 25MPG in short trip suburban driving. This dropped to 21MPG in the last 2 weeks due to most of the driving being in 8 inches of snow (which it managed in perfectly well despite what everyone says about an automatic rear wheel drive). Motorway driving at 80MPH gets around 32MPG.

Your 40 litres is 9 gallons so you're getting about 34MPG, if its suburban driving you're doing quite well.

Get a diesel 250 or 300 w124. 60mpg on motorway possible, 45mpg every day other than short trips when engine is cold.

thanks for the quick responses everyone!

I was doing quite well with my old Rover, until the head gasket blew on Friday :-( I haven't been out of the house since!

There are no motorways near me, most of my driving is on country roads or reasonable traffic in local towns. It make comparing with other cars a bit harder.

I've thought about a diesel, but they seem harder to find in good condition. Is there much difference in the running costs between an E220 and a diesel? i know the fuel consumtion would be better, but the price of diesel is about an extra 5p per litre around here, so would it make much difference to me?

My first choice would be a coupe anyway, but a saloon or estate would be great too.

Cheers

Rich

Hi, I have the same model w124 E220 estate auto 144K miles in it. Yesterday I have filled up again, and I could take 373 mpg with 57l. The avarage was 9.5l on 100km (dunno in mpg). Before that the average was higer 10.5 but I know the reason..... :-)

Oh, one more thing: my thermostat is broken (full open) and the running temp is around 60C instead of 87-90....so I expect better numbers after the replace

and one more little thought: If u are deriving a lot then try to buy a diesel....I had to commute a lot before and the diesel was great choice. Now I dont need to, so I just enjoy the ride ....very :-) But this is my opinion only....

If you are in the sticks then you will get fairly hard on a big heavy auto with a small engine, I bet you don't realise how often you stop and start again and that is the thing that goggles fuel.
Some may sit on a motorway for 20, 30 or even 200 miles each day and that seriously ups your average, in the sticks you tend to have to slow down every 500m for the next corner or junction.

I would guess you would average around 20-25mpg being realistic, so £75 for 270-320 miles.
The diesel would be giving you around 35mpg doing the same, so £80 for 450 miles.

Blimey! I only used to get a MAXIMUM of 42mpg out of my manual W124 300D, and that was dribbling along the motorway.

John reckoned his was turning in an average of 29 to the gallon on mixed use for the 220 I did for him.

Hi VP500

Interesting discussion, I run an E220 Coupe, was getting an average of 380 - 410 miles on a tank, which is around 30 - 32 mpg, this has dropped over the past few weeks with the great winter weather, but still around 350 miles per tank.

I do a daily drive of 30 miles round trip, with a mixture of heavy city traffic and nice country roads, but not much motorway driving.

Recently went to Yorkshire with 4 in the car (plus too much luggage) steady 80 mph (ish) on the motorway plus lots of tourist driving, and got nearly 450 miles from a tank.

Great cars in whatever form, hope you find one you like, and hope this information helps too. It was one of the first questions I was asking before I bought one.

Hi eleven

Your journeys sound similar to mine. How many litres do you normally use to cover 380-410 miles?

I think I'm going to get my current car fixed, it'll be worth more as a part-ex and give me time to find a good MB.

Cheers

Rich.

I have an E220 Coupe and I get between 360 and 380. Thats a 40 mile round daily commute (35 of that on motorway). Then the odd short trip here and there.

I may be selling mine in a couple of weeks (when car dealers are open and I can go looking for a new one) (photos here: http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/79083-meet-new-boss-same-old-boss.html ) if so I will stick it in the spotted on ebay section.

Good luck with your hunt, they are epic cars.
