i've got a problem at the minute to do with the fan belt. I had a belt snap last week so replaced it. The belt had only been on about 6 months and was showing signs of wear on the back side of it. I have now replaced the belt but the back of it i definately rubbing on something already and it's only been on a week. In my opinion the belt is too tight, ie too small (the wrong belt). The tensioner pulley assembly is at full stretch, ie the damper is fully compressed and the spring is at full stretch. I think that the tensioner pulley is so near the crank pulley that the backs of the belt are rubbing against each other causing the wear. The belt that i replaced a while back was considerably looser.

Can you guys help? I think either the spring isn't doing it's job on the idler pulley assembly or that the belt supplied is the wrong one. My car is without air conditioning. When i pulled on the belt it is very very tight so i don't think it's the spring.

Have i been supplied with the wrong belt? has anyone heard of this before?

Any advice is appreciated.

You need to give your VIN to the Merc dealer parts person, and they will give you the correct size belt once you clarify with them there is no air-con.

The belt route diagrams with (various options) are in the handbook and Haynes manual.

contitech site

Contitech who make the multi v belts for mercedes list 3 belts for the OM 605.911 ENGINE as follows

6PK 2030KI ALT (PS)
6PK 2080 ALT PS
6PK 2140 ALT PS AC

6 =no of vs in the belt, PK =v shape 2080=belt length

SEE the Searchable Catalogue Automotive Aftermarket section of http://www.contitech.de/ct/contitech/allgemein/eservice/eservice_e.html#ptg
you wil get one from Eurocar parts for 1/2 the money Merc charge.

It could also be that the tensioner is on the way out!

When the tensioners are worn the belts don't run true, and the tensioner assembly will need replacing, otherwise the belt will rub and get thinner and thinner until it snaps.

The springs generally last forever, but it's time for a new belt shocker and tensioner assembly.

Hi guys, i checked my belt yesterday and it's the 6PK2030 one. I went to GSF this morning and got a new belt, 6PK2080. While i was there i looked in their book myself and found the w124 e250 diesel, 605911 etc and in their book it listed 6PK2080 so i don't know why i was given the wrong belt last time (or even last 2 times i think?) While i was there i also got a new tensioner pulley and tensioner damper.

I've just nearly finished fitting these new bits but it got dark and i'm outside with no lights. I had 1 problem though! i couldn't get the tensioner damper off because i couldn't remove the fan/water pump pulley. I don't have the proper merc tool to hold the pulley still while i undo the bolt. Does anybody know where to get the tool or any tricks for removing the fan without the fancy tool?
