W124 E250D Belt Tensioner/Damper rattle ?.

Hi until recently a HAPPY owner of 1995M E250 DIESEL,200,000 miles,FSH.I have a rattle from Belt tensioner/damper/pulley?.Once rattle starts you can see belt wobbling so much so it skipped off PAS pulley(1rib)
just as i moved to garage to work on.The rattle will automatically stop, engine becomes smooth and quiet once BELT squirted with WD40 (LOTS)this can last upto 5 mins.Removed Radiator etc, taken tension off belt.I
believe damper is shot (could see movement in bushes when running),my
concern is that i can easily move tensioner itself by holding pulley,it is moving back and forth quite a lot around 17mm hex bolt ?.Pulley seems to be ok ?.Is tensioner shot(Have not removed yet tried with 17mm and 3/8
going nowhere),any suggestions/help/remedies money is very tight @ the
moment.Is there is any way i can fix even short term without replacing
Damper/Pulley/Tensioner.

Hi Mr Nice,

You can get a damper from Euro car parts I think they are around £26. I changed the one on my W124 coupe recently.

I replaced the damper on my 1994 E300D also recently.

On mine, the bottom bolt of the damper didnt quite come out enough to remove the damper. So what i did was take the belt off the pully fouling the damper, then loosen off the fan shroud for better access.

With a spanner, carefully loosen (not too much as the bolts will fall out and ruin your day!) the 5(?) bolts on the pully so that it can be wiggled around. then you can just about get the bolt out enough to remove the damper.

may be worth replacing the belt at this time too.
 
Belt tensioner/Damper rattle ?.

Thankyou both for your speedy replies.I will replace the Damper as i am 99% certain it is shot.GSF £18.00 + vat.I will remove complete Tensioner
unit once i can undo the 17 mm hex bolt holding it to block to replace this.
My concern as previously mentioned is the main tensioner and the play,
side to side movement with no tension on it ?.Should the Tensioner body
be fixed ie no play etc of any sort once Damper/Spring are disconnected?.
