W124 E250Diesel 1994 Starting Problem

I have the above mercedes and stood it up for approx 3 yrs. Prior to this the engine was a first time starter. Now all i get is I can turn the engine and it desperately tries to fire up and sometimes even does but as soon as i put a bit of throttle on it dies. At times i can start it and leave it on a very lazy idle (hunting) and again as soon as my right foot goes anywhere nr the accelerator it dies.
Can anybody shed any light on this?

I expect there is air in the fuel system. Check for leaks and air bubbles.
