1996 W124 E220 Coupe
Hi all,

Hope everyone is enjoying the weather as of late.

I wanted to ask for some advice - I am new to Mercedes with the W124 in particular, and bought a w124 coupe e220 over a year ago, which I have enjoyed and continue to do so.

I have been offered a w124 E500, and am seriously considering it. I wanted to ask what kind of reputation this car has, and approximate values for them.

The car I have been offered can be seen following the link below.

Used 1992 W124 Mercedes Benz 500E for sale - PistonHeads (Ref 1379848)

Opinions and advice very welcome.

Regards,

Adil

That looks a good example if it all stacks up in real life.

Depends what you want from the car ie. regular/daily use, or just odd weekends etc. as it will be thirsty.

Can you live with left hand drive.

The Boss of Mercedes said a few years ago in magazine article interview, that it was his favourite Mercedes, and showed him standing next to one same colour.

Considered at the time to be a well rounded and sorted car.

Keep it in good order and I cannot see you loosing any money on that.

It's also a fairly easy classic car to keep also, as there is plenty of knowledge out there and the parts supply for mechanical parts is never a real problem with older Mercedes vehicles.

Agree with kth286, W124s whatever engine size are fairly easy to keep as regarding spares. However as you probably know, always buy on condition.

The replacement cost of E500 bodywork i.e. front wings etc do not come cheap as there is a hefty premium above the cost of standard W124 wings. The engine is basically bullet proof but must have had regular oil and filter changes during its life.

Remember that these E500/500Es are W124s and have the same weaknesses that all W124s have.

Value of these vehicles much depends upon condition but for me, I would be looking at £15,000 + and expecting the very best of condition. Read up on these cars to see what was basic equipment and what extras there were; my preference would be for originality.

The suspension is sitting high at the back... Sign of an issue with the SLS or fitment of incorrect springs.

Otherwise looks a nice car.. Nothing beats an E500 W124.

Looks like a Japanese import. Can't tell 100% from the photos but the bumpers and kit look to be the wrong colour & finish

If it's a 1992 car I would expect it to be badged 500E and to have a post-facelift grille & bonnet - but then lots of W124s don't conform exactly to what you expect!

Way too expensive for a 92 500E Japan import!

Otherwise a nice motor, the EVO II rims really suit it and silver sets it off nicely.

Agree with Jay on the rear, sitting way too high for the normal SLS suspension.

Engine wiring harness......you would need to check that its been replaced.

IMHO....car is too expensive

Do you not mean...wouldn't have expected it to be..etc etc?

1992 cars were never facelift surely? So it's been tampered with and therefore worth a lot less than asked for.

I meant to say I would have expected it to have a pre-facelift bonnet & grille... but clearly the hands weren't following the brain

Thanks Gents,

Am beginning to understand the prices a bit better of these cars, so can see why so many believe it is over-priced.

Will present the seller (a trader) with these arguments and see if it results in dropping the price.

Also, thanks for mentioning the wiring harness - do NOT want to deal with that if I were to buy it!

Keep them coming gentlemen - will be building them up, and asking the questions.

Best,

Adil
