recently my mercedes w124 (300d;E) has
deveopled a rather loud rattling noise that comes from the engine, this noise was always there but recently got louder.

My local independent says all E300 have the same enging rattle, but I believe it to be something worthwile fixing as I can't believe MB would let a car come out of its factory rattling, I have rread on a previous forum hat it could be the fanbelt pulley i think

any hints would be appreciated

well those 300d arent the quietest on the best of days, but whats the mileage? has the timing chain been replaced?

Does it rattle all the time or when you pull away

Rattle

It's more than likely to be the serpentine belt dampor. The metalastik bush at the top of the damper breaks up & it rattles. You can stop it rattling by (carefully) reaching behind the spinning fan and pushing the top of the damper towards the block. If the rattle stops, there's your answer

You can do a quick & dirty fix by putting a thick rubber washer behind the top mount of the damper. Or buy & fit a new damper
