Just wondering is it possible, or practical, to change the rear suspension on a 1994 W124 estate from the standard self-leveling to ordinary shocks and springs? Mine is a bit "bumpy" on one side at the rear and may need some attention.

One of the very best bits of a 124 estate is the suspension - so much better to get it fixed. May not be so horrendous as you might think. What would be horrendous (I imagine anyway) would be the practicality of fitting some shocks and springs - I mean just where are they going to go? You would have to re-design the entire rear of the car wouldnt you?
Have you taken a look at the system and how it works - it is fantastic engineering and pretty simple technology really - lots of pipes and bits but the basic technology is straightforward - and it works!

Normally just the spheres that go- quite cheap to replace. They are partly filled with fluid and nitrogen at pressure separated by a diaphragm which eventually leaks Do a search on the subject on the forum.

Cheers chaps, didn't really think it was practical but you never know until you ask! I have a look around and see what I can find out.
