Can anybody please tell me what the red plunger mechanism is for on the rear inner wing next to the fuel filler, on my 1989 124 Estate?

I have pulled it (well it is a red button) and nobody was ejected from the car. I have not heard of a nuclear missile being launched in Kent? So have no idea what it is for.
