Newbie here - be gentle.

I've had my 1990 300E for a couple of weeks now. Lovely smooth engine, no apparent problems with the automatic box.

Then, accelerating normally from a junction, slightly uphill, there's a big bang, a shudder and no drive. Engine fine, stick still moves through the box but a slight graunch as it goes into Park.

Could it be a driveshaft? I've had a swift look underneath and can't see anything obvious. All ideas gratefully received.

Stick the gearbox in neutral- handbrake off -- chock the wheel left on the ground- jack up one rear wheel and then get an assistant to turn it- the propshaft should turn all the way to gearbox output flange if nothing in the drive train[ excepting the gearbox] is broken.

The offside halfshaft has fractured. Not a hugely difficult job, by the looks of it. Should I replace couplings/boots at the same time?

That's really helpful - thanks!

GSF don't seem to do driveshafts, just the prop couplings - is MBUK the only source?

Many scrappers to choose from who are likely to have the bit; I'd start with retrodave111 - on here and other forums.

Breaker is a good idea-- but be careful I have a feeling there may be detailed changes to the drive shaft design from year to year model to model. Make sure you are buying exactly the right part by going for one from the same model and year as your car if at all possible. If possible compare the broken one with the replacement side by side - things to note the design of the inner connecting flange and outer spines

Cheers, all - much appreciated :-)

Recon shaft ordered yesterday - should be ready Monday. Wonder if the dealer in Wolverhampton will have bolts/castle nut in stock*...?

* hoho, etc. ;-)

Chaps, does anyone please know the correct name for the component that controls the idle speed/fuelling on the M103? Ta muchly.

Main one is the Fuel Distributor, see attachment. There's also the Idle Control Valve, Throttle Potentiometer & the Throttle Micro Switch.

Edit: What I would say if you don't really know the system, get a pro to look at it and carry out the standard tests. I say that, as I've been messing around with KE-Jetronic for too many years now and still haven't got fully to grips with it. And don't just keep throwing parts at either, could have something basic wrong with it, like a fault in the wiring loom. Oh, I forgot to mention a faulty OVP relay too!

John, thanks - useful advice.

OVP relay seems OK, but it is the one fitted on the line in 1989. It spent a week recently with my 'tame mechanic' but he was unable to trace the fault. I think you're right about it being time for a 'pro'...
