W124 fuel tanks

Hi guys,

anyone know if there is a difference between petrol and diesel fuel tanks in the w124 saloons? I'm going to be fitting a turbo diesel into my 300e over xmas, and wasn't sure if I need to change the fuel tank or just some of the fittings.

Well they seem to have different part numbers.

300E

Looking through the numbers 1244700304 is listed as a replacement for both vehicles with a 70l tank, but the fuel strainers have differing numbers.

It might be just the fuel strainer fittings that are different, I'll have a check in the week.

They are the same. Dont forget to remove the fuel filter as the diesels have it located in the engine. U need to change the instrument cluster also

the fuel strainers in the tank are certainly different, the petrol one being more of a finer mesh. (i have cleaned/changed my diesel strainer many times, and broke a petrol 124 and saw the strainer that it had)

That confirms it for me then.

I didn't want to pull the tank out only to find it was the same as what I was replacing it with. I'll get a new strainer from mb and fit that, everything else will come from the donor car.

Thanks, I've got a fast diesel with a tired body and a slow petrol with a mint body, so going to swap everything over.

It's more about time for me now. Rather than doing a little bit here and there to each of them, I'm going to build 1 out of 3.

I can only drive one at a time anyway.
