Afternoon all,
I'm after some help please.
The old '92 W124 300TD decided to not start the other day; issue - no glow plug lamp on the dashboard. No bother, she's an old girl so with a little Easy Start, I was able to get home. Running like a dream.
So I did some online investigation as I've never had this issue before. I ascertained that:
1: The relay was getting 12v + power in
2: That I had continuity from the 6 pin plug to each glow plug. I did this two ways, one with a multimeter on the Ohms setting, getting approximately 0.9 on each one, and the other with a test lamp.
I concluded it must be my relay not functioning properly. Then lying in bed this morning, as you do, it occurred to me to see if the relay was giving an output. So I disconnected the 6 pin plug from it, switched on the ignition and tested each pin, and it was dishing out 12.2v, and after 30 seconds down to 7.7v at which point the glow plug light illuminated on the dashboard, pretty much in line with expectations. This has put a doubt in my mind as to my first conclusion.
There is some additional information I should add here, in case it's relevant. So my son can drive this, I had to have a black box fitted last week. The fitter wired it in under the carpet just in front of the drivers' seat, and is permanently live. I can't quite see how, but I'm wondering if this has a bearing on my predicament? The boy said in the two days leading up to it happening to me that the glow plug light didn't stay on for as long as usual, or he had to switch the ignition on and off a number of times in order to get the light to function at all. He reported that once started he didn't see the light come on again.
If anyone can assist I'd be most grateful, because I'm now at the limit of my knowledge!
