Posted this in the electronics section but it received little reply so I thought i'd try here instead as theres some very clever cookies.

When I select the fan position to windscreen (on the direction dial)no air is blow from the vents at the base of the wind screen. It works on all the other positions (feet, vents etc) just not when the direction is set to windscreen / up arrow.

It does sound thought like air is trapped or 'squeeling' when I choose the windscreen / up arrow and the noise is coming from the left vent of the car, when I open this it lets air through it and the squeeling goes but theres no air from the vents.

Any ideas? Its a bit of pain this time of year!

The car does NOT have aircon.

Thanks in advance.

The direction knob is linked by rods to various flaps in the air ducts in behind the console ( no electronics involved ) - most likely a linkage has broken , come off or been fouled by something .

I remember when putting in some wiring for an audio system , I had to re-route some of my cables as they fouled one of the rods and affected the operation of the heater .

Just as a follow up to this incase it happens to anyone else.

After removing the control fascia (I have made a thread on how to do this somewhere, last year).

I got to the two dials and there are two steel cables, in sleeves, going into the directional dial and two wires underneath (see my very basic diagram) ignore the stock picture I took off the web!

The cable on the right obviouslly opens the windscreen flap and this has come away from its collar, meaning there was no tension when selecting the windscreen, it just required slipping back into place and I gently crimped it a little and it was working fine again!

Then its just the fiddly part of putting it all back together, but got there in the end!

I absolutley love working on these cars.

New radio in tomorrow, but thats going to be boring by todays standard!
