mercedes e200 / ford capri 2.1
Hi all...new member here.been scouring the internet for info and images of a w124 pickup. Not many out there so all the more reason for doing it myself.
I have found a post on hjere which mentions 'chassis strengthening' but there is not much info and no pictures.
iv got an e200 4 door sedan.iv got a few other projects and now iv got my capri on the road its time to play with the merc noow its mot has ran out.
questions
1. Will the chassis need strengthening if I chop the roof about 6 inches behind the b'pillar

2. Where will the strengthening bars/plates/rods go

3. Will it need an sva test after such alterations to the structure

thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum.

First you need an estate to do the pickup conversion, the saloon has the fuel tank inside the car and rear end would be a nightmare to get right.

It will need chassis strengthening, once you have built a bulkhead inside the b pillars you can run box section steel to the rear of the car through the welded up rear doors.

I'm not sure if it will need an sva or not, but if you do the conversion to a decent standard it should pass a normal mot. Just inform the dvla that it is now a 2 seater pickup.

Ok then il keep that in mind.if I cant get an estate for a swap with mine then il scrap the idea.
would it not be possible to make a new fuel tank to sit inside the spare wheeel well and make a trap door in the bed for access.
I can tig weld and have made ally tanks before.
is the saloon a complete 'no go' or are there ways around the fuel tank problem.
my plans were as carat62 stated and that was wled up rear doors and run son tube or box down to the rear light cluster.would that be suitable chassis strengthening or would I need to do anything underneath.

thanks for the quick replys aswell
