hi

occasionally my 1994 W124 sunroof wont open very well - it appears to require some sort of greasing to allow a nice smooth operation.

does anyone know what/where to grease to bring it back to its best?

thanks

Derek

Hi

i was concerned about this problem as i understand its complex and expensive to dismantle and repair . Ive had a few instances where it has stuck then worked on the second/third time of asking so,
I have put fairly large amounts of vaseline wherever i can apply it to the runners and surrounding areas - although i didnt find it very accessible - i used a small spatula
then wiped off the excess after opening and closing and repeating this a few times
...since then its not missed a beat...yet
im sure there is a better or recommended grease though

thanks. its got worse over time so wanted to ensure it doesnt sieze up completely and then i'll be stuck, literally!

you could alway just tilt instead of slide hehe!

I've sprayed all the linkages/rails etc with silicone spray. Mine previously was a bit lazy - tilt needed a little push to help along. The operation is now pretty swift and smooth. My thinking is that grease or similar will likely attract dust etc. possibly creating a 'grinding' paste. I know MB sell a specific lubricant, so maybe the mechanism does need something heavier than silicone, although as I say it has worked well for me.

ptfe spray appears to be a good solution from a google search. i think i'll give that a try.

thanks guys.

my silver W124 also has the same problem but i've never got the sunroof to slide.... it tilts very rarely but never slides. this is why i want to nip the green car issue in the bud before it develops into a more serious issue.

i'm hoping the silver car can also be greased and the 1st slide persuaded with a hand push and spray at the same time....

GT85 works for me. Comes with a little tube to direct it to the nether reaches.

Edit.

And yes I am referring to sunroof lubrication.

I think its perhaps a myth that they are hard to repair. We had a sunroof specialist sort ours - it was just a rubber grommet that had perished and dropped in the mechanism. He maintained they were pretty easy to work on.

have i done the wrong thing using vaseline ?
