This and that..
Hi
has anyone got a good stockist for the above? I've looked at the usual websites and there seems to be very little available! I priced MB for a laugh and they weren't too bad on small things but the shock absorber prices are a shocker! :)

I have the Genuine sachs/boge part number for Sportline Cab front shocks, but maybe best to go with something from Bilstein. There are some Bilstein experts on here - should be along in a minute or two.

Plenty of discount available at the dealer for parts. Give them the whole list and ask them to quote for the lot but make it clear you'll be looking for 20% off

I was speaking to MB Belfast today about it, and they were given the list and gave a polite but firm refusal on the subject of discount. Perhaps its just them...
Had a look on Bilsteins site, but I'm not sure of what I'm ordering- I've got the original part numbers for everything that I need, but when looking at their products, I can't see if I'm buying the item that corresponds with the MB number....
If only there was a one-stop-shop for everything- other than MB!

I would use MB ONLY for the springs. You need exactly the right ones and they have the 'points system' to calculate what's needed for you exact car. MB prices are usually ok for springs.

Then look for the best prices on Sachs or Bilstein dampers. These are much easier to choose correctly.

Bonne chance.

I've gone through the EPC and got the correct points tally and spring part number, so
I'm not restricted to MB, but they weren't too bad- £160+vat for fronts and £105+vat for the rears. Its the dampers that are the problem though- I can't find out what would go with the part numbers I have. MB want £1160+vat for them!

Are you doing an estate or a saloon? I can't see ordinary shock absorbers costing £1160 + VAT

If your car has SLS then don't replace the struts unless they need replacing. They rarely fail. Just replace the spheres, the hard pipes, the flexi pipes and the banjo bolts

A pair of banjo bolts with washers, BTW, £17. MB prices are getting silly now!

Stick up the original MB part nos for the shock absorbers you require . Most good OEM sites will list their equivalents CROSS REFERENCED to Manufacturer part nos.

The car is an e320 estate, so I will take your advice Bolide and leave the struts for now. The front shock reference is a1243203030. I'll try Motorsport World today...
Thanks again

If it's an E320 estate you should check the front wishbones. Check the balljoints and wishbone bushes for play - if the balljoints have play you'll need new front wishbones and they are £250 + each from MB

Start with the front of the car and get that right. The rear is usually easier. If the car has lost of miles on it it may need new rear subframe leading bushes. Also check the mounts as they can rust away under the underseal

I'd get a good handle on the car before buying parts. It's easy to put money in the wrong areas

It's not just them, i've never managed to get a discount (or even good service, parts guy is useless*) from my local MB dealer and it's not like i was asking for a piddly little order either- last time i tried i was rebuilding the back of the car, subframe out, new bushes, spheres, all fluid lines etc. Ended up making the hardlines ourselves, spheres and some bits from Wunderpartz (as usual fantastically friendly, helpful and easy to deal with) and some of it from MB (hard work, unhelpful and poor service)

As said the SLS struts don't wear out like dampers. They're just hydraulic rams and if they aren't leaking they're fine. The damping is done by by oil flow into and out of the spheres i.e. replace the sheres 'cause the nitrogen spring has 'escaped' and you effectively get new dampers too

* coil loom repair section for example, idiot needed to be given the part # before he'd believe they existed and then tried to sell me 6 of them

It's not just my local then lol

Thanks for all the info guys, your info has been invaluable, particularly when the official outlets are useless- without the info here, I'd be going nowhere!

I've been happy with my dealer parts dept. and discount over the past 11 years in READING.

They are organising an online order system currently, so I have been informed
on my last visit.

It does seem to depend a lot on the individual dealer especially with the older cars. Never had any problems with MB Gatwick or Guildford. They have always been helpful even with some obscure parts and offer discount. The best was 30% off a multifunction switch for the 124. They had had it for so long they were just glad to see it go.
