Hi All

My old car left me stranded by the M25 on Tuesday. The throttle cable snapped. After several hours I managed to get recovered back to Brighton and set about ordering up a new cable to fit. BUT...according to my parts guy at MB Brighton, the cable (A124 300 7330) is no longer made by Mercedes. Also not stocked by Euros or AutoDoc. I have tracked down a couple on Ebay etc in various places but they have a serial number a digit different. 124 300 2330 or 124 300 7230. No luck with my usual breakers yards either...

Any advice on throttle cables (I am not an expert) would be greatly appreciated. Or does someone have the cable I need in the back of a drawer somewhere? Will those cables with different numbers fit and can I just run a new cable through like I would on my bike? Car is off the road and I need help. And if anyone else has a daily driver of this age then check your throttle cable! It broke at its far end, right where it connects to the throttle mechanism.

Car is 1996 S124 e280, auto, 5spd, cruise. (320000 miles )

Thanks

Tom

Depending on where the cable has snapped would a generic cable joiner such as a 'Gripple' (search ebay) be of any use to get your s124 back on the road?

I have in the past had bespoke cables made up at a bycycle repair shop. Maybe a possibility?

Use the centre of a wire conector block .Remove the screws pop wire in both ends screw up just to get you home

There will be a cable manufacturer that specialises in classic car stuff. Back in the day I used Speedy Cables for all my Lotus TVR cables. I have no idea if they still exist after 40 years but someone will be making cables to pattern for classics.

Have you tried a message to MB Edinburgh or MB Newcastle on ebay? I've had two of mine replaced recently but I suppose yours might be different, being the bigger engine?

Edit: I should clarify, they were genuine mb ones sourced by an indie.

To answer my own question, they are different part no. for different models. Seems to be just A1243007330 that's htf.

This page seems to suggest that part no. A1243007130 & A124300230 would fit an E280 Estate up to June 1996. Was yours made after that? Might be worth sending them your VIN?

Hi all

Thanks for advice. Still no luck and too busy to pull the cable out at the mo. Checked out Speedy Cables and they look likely. Got back to my MB parts guy and he found nothing. Will try Edinburgh MB. I would rather fit a new part but suspect I will have to repair the old one.
I’m still wondering whether it’s worth buying one of the cables with a slightly different part number. There are 4 listed on the epc for my car. Two have one digit difference. I can find cables with the other numbers for sale but not mine.
I will keep you posted as to how I resolve this problem and get my old motor running again.

Thanks

Thanks. I am waiting to hear back from those guys. Hopefully they will know which will fit.

The exploded diagram you posted in post no. 11. Do you get any info if you click on the blue part numbers on the far right of the chart, at the top? I'm wondering if the htf 7330 is due to the 5 speed auto. I wish I was more knowledgeable. I hope you find one soon 🤞🏻

7230 and 7430 both click through to a page where they can be ordered. The other 2 7130 and 7330 (my number) are both unavailable. You could be right about the 5 spd. They are rarer and more likely to have things discontinued maybe?
I will make some calls tomorrow and see if I can move this on a bit.
Any more expert advice gladly received.

Happy father’s day

Tom

There are a few places out there that make bespoke cables for motorbikes , looks like it maybe just the inner section that needs replaced so i am sure if you sent off the old cable then a new inner could be manufactured for the original outer and using the same ends.

Venhill can't do it. Cable-tec tell me to send it in to them and they'll let me know. Waiting to hear back from Speedy Cables. This is turning out to be a pain in the ****. This car has been mostly trouble free motoring for the 12 years I've had it. I hope that I'm not going to be searching high and low for every failed part from now on. I guess all cars go through this phase if you keep them long enough. As parts become NLA and the used market goes up in price and parts run out etc...I love this car but I'm not sure I'm so interested if it becomes a battle to keep it on the road. I'll keep you posted when I have news regarding the cable and I advise other 124 drivers to have a look at their throttle connection...

I might have found one in a breakers yard. £130! Also the number on the unit itself says 1243007430. I can find these online in Japan...They have a few RHD 124s over there.
I also spoke to Edinburgh MB parts. Very helpful. 7330 & 7430 are RHD. 7130 & 7230 are LHD... But none available europe wide.

I hope it fits 🤞🏻. I've noticed in the last couple of years parts are harder to source. I'll probably make these two my last 124's. Let us know how you get on.

Hi All

Cable(s) sourced and installed. Car up and running again and all good. I now have two good cables one of which is on the car and a third (the original) at 'speedy cables'. They are not replying to my enquiries even though they acknowledged receipt of the broken cable. I have asked that they quote repair before going ahead. Worst case scenario is I now get a large bill for refurbing the original cable which will leave me with three. First cable cost £30 from a breaker I know and the second cost £95 from eBay (Fraubenz). Both in reasonably good condition but with plastic coming off the outer cable. I think that RHD M104 engines share a similar throttle cable so that's what I searched up. Very easy to remove/install. Mainly pulling bits of trim off and I installed some new cabin filters that I had while I was there. The old ones were totally BLACK. Pedal pressure is quite different though with much shorter travel. I quite like it though and as all gears change as they should and tick over is the same I'll leave it for now. I am driving to Cornwall tomorrow morning and...I finally bought breakdown cover...
