W124 Tyre/wheel arch problem (UK)

Hi new boy here.My son has a W124 230E 1990 4 door saloon,we dropped the and stiffened the suspension last year and the car runs on 5" alloys. We were given some beautiful flat face period AMG 8" alloys ref. 8j x 17 MZ,fitted 225-45ZR17 tyres.I think they are from a W126.We tried to fit them but the off set is too great and they foul the arches front and rear. There is an AMG extension kit which pushes out the rfront wings and suggest you roll the lip of the arch out but it looks that this would not be enough to clear the rims and make it legal....It looks like serious panel beating, but it would look great.
Option 2 what is the widest rim we could use,to use these new tyres with an off set that would mean little 'customizing' but that would look period.Any constructive criticism is very welcome.

Hi offset unknown sadly,I have been advised that the 225 tyre would fit inside the arch and that trial and error would find the right size and offset.I probably have not helped matters by dropping the suspension.
I was hoping that someone may have had a similar problem and would save me wasting a whole chunk of time finding out.Any thoughts?
Many Thanks

Would they be a straight swop?
There would still be the issue with clearance at the back.......

No idea ? I know they were flared out to accommodate wider wheels on the 500 .

I believe there are rear wheel arch extensions as well .

you will need offset of about 35mm for 8J/17 to make it perfect fit, but if the drop is too big you will experience some rubbing. check your wheels the offset should be stamped on the inside of the alloy.

Hi Krimat,I'll check them this morning.I take it the offset is the crucial thing, like I said a buddy seems to think the car will take a 225/45 17 tyre ok,it's just a case of trial and error.I'd really like to fit the AMG rims but I checked out the wheel arch amg extension kit and I don't think it will push the wing out far enough to get the rim 'covered' to make the thing legal.

You really need to get the correct off-set for your car. Otherwise you could be chasing yourself and your wallet around for a long time.

Off-set defines where the wheel sits in relation to the hub. Or (put another way) how far in or out the wheel will sit in relation to the body work. People spend fortunes on-ebay buying wheels that rub the outer wing only to change for them for wheels that then rub the inner wing.

If they are rubbing the inner wing you can space them out. Before doing that get some mates to sit in the back so that you can see where the tyre is in relation to the inner/outer. When I say inner wing. It usually is the shock that they will rub (but you get the gist.

Jaymanek on here maybe able to advise on what the proper off-set should be for your car. Once you know that life gets easier. Good luck.

Should have said

Off-set is usually (not always stamped on the inner wheel as "ET XX" XX being a number like 35. If you cannot see any ET stamp then have a look for two numbers on their own.
