(W124) what does the Torque Convertor do?

UPDATE.

so i started the car today, and no rattle at all.

Opened the roof, no rattle, the engine sounded amazing, and i drove it up and down the hill, and it was sounding so damn good!.

Drove back, parked car up, with foot on brake, and gear in drive, no rattle (when previously there would be)

thought all was sorted.

Then i closed the roof, and as soon as i closed the roof, the rattle reappeared. arghh.

I opened the roof again, and could hear the rattle again clearly. took it up and down my road, rattle fully evident.

Any ideas now peeps of what this is?

the noise is 100% coming from under the car, between the two front wheels, around the area of the torque convertor, but it was 100% not there at the start, when normally i would hear it on start up.

would the noise be coming from the torque convertor? surely if it was this then it would not sound totally fine and then reappear??? i would have thought if it was the torque convertor, the rattle would stay until resolved.

please advise anyone on this.

many thanks peeps

I would say something to do with exhaust as its probably heat related.

Cheers Jay.

But often the noise happens when the car is cool.

i have only used it for one drive recently other than that, it is in the garage or driveway, so would it still be heat related, when most of the time, its on starting the car from cold?

Boss. Instead of keep asking the same questions, why not have a look around when the noise is present or get mechanic to have a proper look.

Hey Dieselman.

I am in this process with a mechanic friend. But he is not a specialist and i would not leave my car with him, but i honestly do not know one mechanic i can trust at this point, after the recent episode with two garages in Feb, who i feel compromised my car, i have spoken to Barry at great length about this, and Jay, and i just need some one local i can trust.

I have even considered getting Oli in portsmouth to be my permanent garage, and get the car shipped over..

but until i have some one i can trust, i am not going to let her out.

so if anyone has any recommendations, then great.

i know some suggestions of one in brentford, which is very local, but havent had a chance to see him yet.. but any other recommendations would be grand

Shipped over...it's a 70 mile drive, done in 1.5 hours.

What I really meant was get the car to do the noise then lie down next to it and d have a listen and a poke around, the origination of the noise should soon be apparent.

i have tried that, we got it on the MOT lift and had a look, the area was around the torque convertor, but both me and mechanic (kiiri @ deansbrook garage) could not pin point the exact source.. its tough - he is buying in some listening equipment for this week to help identify the sound, but its not apparent just by looking :(

with any other car, i would have no probs putting on the 140 mile round trip, but for the sake of maintenance, no point, rather put it on my mates trailer, and get it taken down.. its a nuisance, but when im so particular about mileage, the last thing i wanna do is put it on for a maintenance run, i dont mind for holidays or purpose, but not for that.

i know many of you wont agree, but its just how i have been for ever with her.

i mean, the new w212 has not even got 3500 on the clock yet after nearly a year. thats crazy for me, as the purpose was for my day to day driving, but instead i have stuck to the smart and slk... which now has some 5,000 miles and 130,000 miles respectfully :)

I presume the TAGS are not system generated...but a mod with a sense of humour?

yup, same with the Audi TT listing.. some stupid immature tags, which after seeing, decided not to bother publishing out the mbclub uk link to the web, which i was going to do, but the tags were immature and detract away from an otherwise good forum.

Is there any way you can make a video like you did before Boss? It would help people on here with their suggestions.

I know what you mean about a Mechanic and you are wise to be cautious. I can also understand that using a transporter for a low mileage car is not over the top. I have done it several times for a 800 km + trip.

You have a cracking car there Boss, a visit to the sites in Germany will let you know just what a following they have there for cars like yours, as time goes by it becomes more and more difficult to find another!!

What about Ian at 124Works, he might be the type of bloke who'd be interested in this sort of thing too......??

i will make one in the next day or so.

hows things at your end? cars running good?

Old Blue is finally going into the shop to have all the suspension and most of the steering (not the box) replaced with MB Genuine parts. New wheels and tyres too. Just waiting for the remaining parts to arrive and trying to tee up a wheel aligner here in NZL, one that can set the thing so it doesn't pull left. Most alignment shops look at you awful funny when you mention it. You know to walk away when you get the feeling they think they walk on water.....:):)

Will need to do the head gasket at the same time and possibly a trannie rebuild (although this may be done a little later), it is starting to get to that time in life where it needs a bit of a refit to be at its best, but to me it is definitely worth it Boss.

The green car I swear, is turning just a little darker green. :):)
