W126 bonnet fitting problems

I must have been very evil in a previous life.
One of the springs on my W126 bonnet has broken.
When I fitted a replacement the bonnet rewarded my efforts by misaligning itself and piercing the windscreen with the pointed corner on that side

How can this possibly happen?
Or am I just an incompetent mechanic who should give it all up?

hmmm sounds very strange... there is a lot of adjustment on the mounts but there shouldnt be enouigh to allow it to hit the screen...

did you remove the hinge from the bonnet?

No, didnt remove hinge, straight forward fitting of new spring.
Is the hinge adjustment that you mention under the wing?
