Hi.

I want to upgrade the speakers in my 89 300SE and was wondering if anyone has done this?

I am wondering if it is possible to fit bigger speakers in place of the standard items?

Any advice would be most helpful.

Thanks

i should imagine some one like autoleads do conversion plate
not 100%
i went into my local halfords and got them to look through there catalogue's
or you could try your local car audio shop!
they might help

Merc speakers of that era are of non standard size[ by modern standards] but its still possible to get good co- axials for the front. The rear would require some metal modification if you want to fit large speakers.

The front speakers are ( from memory ) 6"x4.5" - in my 500 I bought a pair of JBL speakers that fitted straight in and gave a useful boost in power handling .

The pre-facelift cars also had this size in the rear shelf , but post facelift the size went up to 6" or 6.5" circular units . Again in my 500 , I fitted JBL units but this time made up an MDF shelf to provide a better baffle ( this can always be removed to restore the car back to original spec and no holes cut anywhere in the metal ) , at the same time doing away with the plastic trays for the first aid kit and oddments then using the aperture to fit 2x KEF B139 LF units - I have three power amplifiers in the boot running , respectively , the front speakers , rear speakers and LF units via a Sony DSP unit which also acts as an electronic crossover . Both pairs of JBL speakers are two way coaxial units .

The pictures below show the underside of the shelf with the LF units visible through the apertures through which they use the boot as an infinite baffle enclosure ( the coaxial speakers sit above the metal shelf )

and a similar installation in my 190E ( which only had room for one LF unit ) before the new shelf was trimmed over

I got the JBL speakers from CPC | CPC - Over 100, 000 products from one of the worlds leading distributors of electronic and related products. who are in Preston ; Maplin Electronics also used to carry them .

Alpine SXE 4625S 4x6 coaxial speakers were what i used in the front, and the rear ones (which sound great) are item 200442915713 currently on ebay.de. I offered less than the selling price and it was accepted. They sound like much bigger speakers than they are.

Wow, Pontoneer, yours looks fancy! bet that sounded great :)

Hi...thanks for the advice.

I removed the speaker grilles for it to reveal a pair of dual cone Blaupunkt 6x4s so I dutifully pulled them out and replaced them with a pair of Alpine 6204s which id bought from Ebay for 99p (brand new and boxed) a few weeks back on a whim!

The sound is far better especially since ive replaced the Blaupunkt radio with an Alpine 7525 and CHM 620 radio and Changer!

I have an old Car Stereo magazine somewhere that has an article on Radio1 DJ Tommy Vances old W126 that had a big Alpine system fitted......was interesting reading!
