w129 gearbox problems

was driving along lost power in all gears, would not engage at all. when put in park heard a crunching noise and it seems to get stuck in park. can anybody help in diagnosing the problem?

What gearbox, 4 or 5 speed.

The crunch doesn't sound good.

What year? is it a 722.6 box?

Its a 1992 sl 500 4speed box

What is the ATF level like?

Remove the dipstick with the engine running. Best to do when hot.
