W140
Hi everybody...I've been reading up on this forum for months now,it's been great reading your comments.

I've got a really soft spot for the w140, I've found one for sale, and just wanted to hear comments from members.

I really, really like it...i'm going to go see it tomorrow.

I'd be grateful if anybody could advice me on this,I'm just feeling nervous.

Mercedes-Benz S Class S320 4dr Auto [4] 3.2

Thanks in Advance...

The wheels are wrong for the car, the re-badging is silly and the number plates are both barry.

However, you have to be impressed by the spec - just make sure all those gadgets work.

+1 to the above. It's probably worth getting it inspected by a respected indi if you are not that confident in checking the car over yourself.

You are going to need a long garage/driveway. I see it's got an LPG conversion. These can be of "variable quality" depending on who did the conversion so I would be looking for some paperwork/history about that.

This cars need to be at least 5.0l IMHO the m104 is too weak for the body.

No it's not.

It's a a 17 year-old cruiser which will waft you along sedately not some wannabe c0ck rocket.

if you say so....
I have the hardcore version of that engine on my w202 and I wouldn't want it in a heavier car.

That W140 isn't "hardcore" so you are not comparing like with like.

People buying a 3.2 litre W140 (with LPG conversion) aren't "hardcore" either.

They want a nice old cruiser on a budget.

how can you be on a budget when you buying an Sclass ?
Lpg I would run away from it!!

You buy a tidy looking one for about £3k with an LPG conversion and hope that nothing much goes wrong with it.

I understand the op likes the car he never mentioned he was on a budget.;)

I would have thought that was obvious.

Why else would he be looking to buy a 17 year-old luxo-barge which is on sale for 3.5k ?

Why would he be looking at a smaller-engined one with an LPG conversion ?

Why would he join a forum to seek free advice rather than pay for a professional inspection ?

Because in the forum there's people who owns them and could help him with information.

Oh OK.

So the only other clues to his budget limitations are the asking price, the smaller engine and the LPG conversion then.

I like the wheels, but ditch the badges.

Make sure ALL the electrical toys work.

They're heavy on fuel and tyres.

As suggested above, get a professional inspection. You could be buying a money pit.

I don't think 3.5k for a s320 is cheap ! He could find one for half of that ! And I understand the op likes the car !! As I said above.

I have a 25 year old W126 300SE. It has around 190bhp. Which suits the car, and me for that matter, perfectly. Not everyone wants their cars to do a billion miles an hour and do 0-60 in a fraction of a second.

The OP probably just wants to waft around in utter luxury and quality and is not bothered that it doesn't have a V8 or V12 under the bonnet. And in the case of budget motoring it is probably best to steer well clear of the bigger engined models. Especially the troublesome V12.

He could find one for a lot less than half of the price. But it would be a banger which would almost certainly need constant expenditure.

His plan is obviously to pay more for a far better one and then hope to avoid any cash-sapping bills.

whatever !! If you think a car like this with a lpg conversion will be trouble free .... M104 are very known for head gaskets problems ... I'd think I'd be safer with a m119 without any Mickey Mouse modifications!;)

Wonder what the new member is thinking?
