Hi there. Wondering if anyone can help me out there. I been having problems when my car has been stood overnight and I come to set off in the mornings. There is very little drive although the engine revs are quite high. The continues for no more than a couple of minutes as it gets progressively better. I had the AFT fluid changed around 18 months ago by a local Indi. I bought myself a dipstick for the 722.6xx gearbox and when cold outside (5degs) the oil level reads at the top of the 25deg mark with I thought was a little odd. I then went on a 20 mile drive which involved some dual carriageway at 70+ to get the gearbox hot. The engine temp was up to 80degs when I returned. I dipped the oil again and this time it was not quite up to the 80 deg mark. Can this be explained in anyway? There are no oil leaks on the underside of the vehicle.

I expect the gearbox is worn out. It's slipping so I expect the clutch plates are worn and it has a oil pressure problem.

Bad news from BlackC55
Just to be sure....
Did local Indi put in the correct ATF, and change the filter?
Proper dipstick or dodgy eBay item?
Are you checking (hot and cold) with the engine running?
Strange results you're getting, should be at the low temp mark when cold and at the high temp mark when hot.

Thanks for the comments. When it went in for its service around 6 months later I mentioned the problem to them, although not as bad as it is now, and they said STAR was showing that some of the gears were reaching limits for getting to pressure in time and 3rd gear was exceeding the time. Suggested worn box and would need overhauling. £800 job or there abouts. Correct fluid was used and dipstick. Would a fluid change for something more viscous for example help my situation or is it a mechanical issue do you think?

Its time to overhaul the gear box.

No amount of fluid tweaking or MB Star sessions will fix it as worn is worn.

Plenty of specialists out there to do the job for you.

As for the dipstick it can show higher cold than hot (80')
that's why the oils measured at 80' and not cold.

So the 25C mark on the dipstick cannot be relied on?

ATF on mine always seems to be thereabouts when cold, at the 80C mark when hot.

Michael
