Hi anybody know where I can get the pin that holds the lid in place its about 6 inch lon

Have you tried ebay or a scrappy?

Yes had a look no joy

The scrap yards do not want to get stuck with a Lid and no hinge pin, so you may need to buy the Lid, just to get the pin.

Is it just a bit of straight rod, or something more complicated.....if it's simple, you could probably make it yourself.

Have you asked MB parts, I am amazed with the ML how you can get even the smallest parts from them, even the rubber buffer on that lid they got for me.
