Our new to us M Class drives and corners well but can (not always) when you accelerate vibrate and produce excessive road/tyre noise. I have new tyres of the same make on each axle and the car has been tracked and aligned. There’s no knocking noises on full lock or the suspension and the gearbox changes gear smoothly, so I’m wondering what might be the cause?

Where should I be looking, the driveshafts uj’s?

Thanks.

How many miles has it done, I have a a W164 and suffered vibrations most noticeable at lower speeds and it also led to a jerk when shifting gear, accelerating and braking. I turned out to be the engine and transmission mounts - they looked old but OK but replacing them sorted it.

Mine had probably done a very similar mileage and was also 13 years old. The main dealer and well respected marque specialist both thought they looked OK. The specialist said it was worth a shot though because there was no other obvious cause. Good luck sorting it out.

Happy to report that all issues solved with the benefit of a filter and fluid change, it was using the factory fitted 2011 filter. My Alfa Romeo independent in Ferndown recommended Revtech who are a few doors down from their premises. Revtech Also diagnosed an O ring on the turbo intake as having gone and small amounts of oil were being sprayed at the top of the engine. Beyond the leaking engine oil cooler (I’ll save that joy for later in the year) she’s fully up together and I was most impressed with Revtech.

Glad it’s sorted
