W164 When 280 CDI change to 320 CDI

Hi all,

We don't have an ML yet, still looking.

We have decided we want a 280 CDI or 320 CDI

I see some changes, but I am sure there are more which I haven't spotted.
The front headlights
The steering wheel
The wheels look different also.

What else is there please.

Is the 320 CDI engine the 280 CDI ?
Was there any tweaks? and extra power, any better fuel consumption?

Did the petrol 350 come after the 320 CDI ?

We like the 320 CDI, then probably the 280 CDI

When did the petrol 350 become available in UK ?

Thanks

350cdi is the later engine, either with 231 or 265bhp.

I think the 231bhp is an identical engine to the 320cdi & 280cdi, however not 100% certain.

To my knowledge, the difference between the 350cdi-265bhp engine with the 350cdi-231bhp & 320cdi-224bhp & 280cdi-187bhp is the injectors.

231bhp-350cdi & 320cdi-224bhp & 280cdi-187bhp are the same engine with a different ECU/map.

Price dependant, I'd go for the 350CDI 265, purely for the reason of being a newer engine with greater power and economy. But all of the others are equally as good of an option.

There are quite a few differences between the 231bhp and 265bhp 350s; from memory the injection system runs at higher pressure pistons are different, dpf regeneration is different. I can't recall everything but it was more involved than injectors. I'm not sure if the revised 2+ auto bxx came out at the same time.

The 350 petrol 272 hp was available from launch in 2005.

The 320 Cdi with 224 hp until late 2008, replaced by the 350 Cdi with 231 hp.

The 265 bhp engine was never an option on the ML.

Lower powered 280 CDi with 190 hp replaced by 300 Cdi with 204 hp in 2009.

Go for 420cdi after face lift then[emoji6]

Hi All,

Thanks for the good replies.

It would be for my wife to drive.
Her daily commute is just 4 miles each way.
For this reason, I feel a diesel, with it's economy, and its "short distance problems" may not be the best choice.

It is looking more and more like a petrol, but not the 500, would be the best choice of engine.

How is the general reliability of the 350 petrol engine?

Forget all that diesel worry, and go for an ML500 [emoji48]

I do think that a diesel has it's place, but not for what my wife will be using it for.

4 miles each way to work, bit of weekend running around.
Her driving would amount to around 60 miles a week.
Probably really no more than 3,500 a year.

I think her insurance on a petrol 500 would be too much, but a petrol 350 would be ok for her.

thanks,

vette

..........or push the boat out and go for a ML63 AMG.

I've been kicking myself for not buying one when I had the chance.

If insurance cost is the only reason for getting a 350 rather than a 500 or 63 then it might be worth getting a quote. You may be surprised!
